The karst landscape around Guilin and Yangshuo - those dreamlike limestone peaks rising from emerald rivers and rice paddies - is one of the most beautiful places in China and the scenery printed on the 20-yuan note. Three to four days is enough to cruise the Li River, cycle the Yangshuo countryside, and add the spectacular Longji Rice Terraces in the hills nearby. This itinerary blends the headline river cruise with slower, greener time in the villages and fields, so you experience both the iconic views and the relaxed rural pace that makes this region so special.
Ease in with Guilin city itself, a pleasant, leafy place built around lakes and rivers. See the twin Sun and Moon Pagodas on Shanhu Lake, lovely when lit up at night, and stroll the Two Rivers and Four Lakes scenic area. The city's standout natural sight is the Reed Flute Cave, a large limestone cavern dramatically lit to show off its stalactites and stone columns - touristy but genuinely impressive. Elephant Trunk Hill, a rock formation resembling an elephant drinking from the river, is Guilin's symbol and a quick photo stop. Guilin is also your transport hub, well connected by high-speed rail and air. Keep this day relaxed; the real magic begins on the river tomorrow. Try the local Guilin rice noodles, a famous regional specialty, for lunch or a cheap, tasty dinner.
Today is the highlight: the Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo, roughly four to five hours drifting past the most famous karst scenery in China - sheer green peaks, bamboo-lined banks, water buffalo and fishermen on bamboo rafts. The classic full cruise on a larger boat includes lunch and ends at Yangshuo; for a more intimate experience, some travellers join a shorter bamboo-raft trip on the prettiest stretch around Xingping, the very scene on the 20-yuan note. Book ahead, especially in peak season, and bring sun protection and a camera. Arrive in Yangshuo in the afternoon and settle in. In the evening, explore the lively West Street, a buzzing pedestrian strip of cafes, bars, shops and street food - cheerfully touristy, but fun. Optionally catch the large-scale Impression Sanjie Liu light show staged on the river itself.
Yangshuo is best enjoyed slowly and on two wheels. Rent a bicycle or e-bike and ride out into the countryside along the Yulong River, where the peaks, paddy fields and old stone bridges are even more idyllic than the main Li River and far quieter. Float a section of the Yulong on a bamboo raft, visit a village, or simply pedal between the karst hills stopping for tea and photos. Other options include the Moon Hill, a peak with a natural arch you can hike up for views, and the terraced viewpoints around the valley. This is the day to do less and savour more - the relaxed, green, rural rhythm is exactly why travellers fall for Yangshuo. Cap it with a riverside dinner and, if you like, a foot massage after all that cycling.
If you have a fourth day, the Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Rice Terraces are well worth it - sweeping, sculpted hillsides of layered paddies built by the Zhuang and Yao minorities over centuries, about two to three hours from Guilin or Yangshuo by road. The terraces are stunning year-round but change with the seasons: shimmering with water in spring, lush green in summer, golden at harvest in autumn, and occasionally snow-touched in winter. Base areas like Ping'an and Dazhai have viewpoints reached by hiking trails or a cable car, plus minority villages and guesthouses if you want to stay overnight for sunrise. It is more of a full-day trip, so plan transport carefully or join a tour; the winding mountain roads and timed light make a driver-guide especially convenient here.
Guilin has its own high-speed rail station and airport with connections from major cities, making the region easy to reach; the Li River cruise is a one-way trip ending in Yangshuo, with a bus or car transfer back. Within Yangshuo, bikes, e-bikes and short taxi rides cover everything. The best seasons are April to October for green landscapes and comfortable cruising, though summer is the rainy season, when the rivers are fuller and the peaks misty - atmospheric but occasionally wet. Spring and autumn are ideal overall. Book the Li River cruise and Longji trips ahead in peak periods, pack rain gear and sun protection, and bring cash or mobile payment for village stalls. A guide helps with cruise logistics, raft arrangements and reaching the terraces smoothly.
