Shanghai Airport and Railway Transfers: Pudong, Hongqiao and the Right Train

Updated 2026-10-09 · 7 min · NebulaTrip editorial team

Shanghai has two airports, several railway stations and more than one kind of airport train. The fastest-looking service is useful only if it goes toward your destination. Plan the entire journey from arrivals or your hotel entrance to the correct terminal or train gate. A published train running time excludes immigration, baggage collection, waiting, station walks and check-in; it cannot establish whether a flight connection is safe.

1. Decode the booking before choosing transport

Write down the airport code and terminal: Pudong is PVG; Hongqiao is SHA. For a railway booking, copy the full station name in English and Chinese. Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, Shanghai Railway Station and Shanghai South Railway Station are different destinations. Do not send a driver simply to “Shanghai station” unless that is genuinely the station on your ticket.

Keep screenshots of the booking and the destination pin available offline. Check whether a flight changes airports, not just terminals. On separate tickets, ask the airline about baggage collection, check-in deadlines and what happens if the first service is delayed. An airline’s connection arrangement and a traveler’s self-transfer are different planning problems.

2. Pudong to central Shanghai: Line 2 or Maglev plus a connection

For a hotel convenient to Metro Line 2, compare the direct metro journey with the Maglev to Longyang Road followed by onward transport. The Maglev’s short ride ends at Longyang Road; it does not deliver you to the Bund, People’s Square or your hotel.

A straightforward metro journey may beat a faster first segment followed by several changes. Follow the signed official taxi queue or confirm the precise ride-hailing pickup area rather than accepting an unsolicited ride in arrivals.

The Airport Link connects Pudong Airport Terminals 1&2 with Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 in about forty minutes of train travel according to current Shanghai government guidance. It is a different service from Metro Line 2 and the Maglev.

At Hongqiao, follow signs onward to the railway departures area or your airport terminal; arrival at the rail stop is not arrival at the flight gate. Terminal 1 needs its own onward plan. Check the operating timetable on the travel day. Official pages checked for this guide show differing first/last departures and intervals, so an old screenshot is not a dependable early-morning or late-night promise.

4. Start correctly at Hongqiao Airport or the railway station

Hongqiao Terminal 1 is served by Metro Line 10; Terminal 2 is served by Lines 2 and 10. Choose the service by your hotel’s station rather than assuming every Hongqiao arrival uses the same route. Airport Terminal 2 and Hongqiao Railway Station form part of the same large hub, but their departure and arrival areas are not interchangeable.

If you arrive by intercity train, first identify your exit and whether you want the metro, a taxi or the airport. For an onward train, verify the departure board and gate after security. China Railway advises allowing time for station walking, identity checks and queues; the train departure time is not the latest time to enter the building.

5. Build a connection backward from the real deadline

Start with the airline’s check-in or bag-drop deadline, or the railway gate-closing instruction. Work backward through security, the terminal or station walk, transport waiting and the journey itself. Then add the uncertain part: getting out of the arriving flight, immigration where applicable, baggage and a possible delay.

For an early flight from Pudong, compare the first usable service from your actual hotel with a prearranged car or a final airport-side night. For a cross-airport flight connection, ask the airline to evaluate the full itinerary before relying on the rail running time. If the margin depends on everything going perfectly, change the connection or protect an overnight stop rather than adding sightseeing.

6. Keep rail tickets and payments straightforward

Use the same valid original passport or other accepted identification used to book an intercity railway ticket. China Railway’s official FAQ says that an itinerary sheet is not a ticket. Keep the train number, date, station and booking reference accessible, and seek the staffed lane if the gate cannot read your document.

For local transport, check the payment method your chosen service accepts. Shanghai’s current metro guidance lists single tickets, transport cards, QR methods and eligible contactless cards. The ordinary one-day and three-day metro passes exclude the Maglev and newer suburban railway lines, including the Airport Link. Do not buy a pass assuming every airport train is included.

7. Make an after-hours and heavy-luggage plan

Do not assume a late landing still leaves rail available after immigration and bags. Check the operator’s final departure from your airport, not the last departure from the city in the opposite direction.

A car may simplify an awkward final kilometer, while a rail journey avoids road congestion. Neither option guarantees a fixed door-to-door time. Send the driver the terminal and Chinese hotel address, agree the pickup process, and tell the hotel if you expect to arrive after midnight so the room is held under the correct arrival date.

8. Transfer questions answered

Is the Maglev the Airport Link? No. The Maglev runs toward Longyang Road; the Airport Link serves the cross-city airport corridor. Pick the endpoint before the train.

Does forty minutes mean I can change airports in forty minutes? No. That is the approximate train journey, with additional formalities and walking on both sides.

Can I add the Bund between a train and a flight? Only after protecting the airline deadline, luggage plan and transport buffer. A short gap is better used for a meal near the required hub than a fragile sightseeing detour.
