Duolun & Zhenglan Grassland 3-Day Private Tour from Beijing: Mongol Steppe & Off-Road Crossing

★★★★★ 4.8 (84)⏱ 3 days and 1 hour · Private🗣 English guide

Overview

A 3-day private grassland escape north of Beijing into the Xilingol steppe, with Mongolian horsemanship, an off-road crossing where prairie meets desert, herder hospitality and starry skies.

About This Tour

Just north of Beijing the Hunshandake sands give way to the rolling Xilingol grassland, the cradle of Mongol-Yuan culture and the historic Jinlianchuan steppe where Kublai Khan once held court. This 3-day private tour for your group only explores it with an English-speaking guide and private vehicles, immersing you in living Mongolian culture rather than viewing it from afar. At a Mongol settlement near Duolun you watch a horsemanship show that stages the nomadic epic in real scenery, learn a few words of Mongolian and join a dance class, then feast at a Mongolian 'zhama' banquet with hand-held mutton and folk song around a bonfire under the stars. A full off-road day crosses where grassland meets desert to a turquoise steppe lake, visiting a herder's felt yurt for home-style Mongol food, milk tea and conversation about nomadic life. The journey ends at the Xilingol Cultural Heritage Museum on the Jinlianchuan grassland, deepening the Mongol-Yuan story. Easy and family-friendly, it suits travelers wanting open horizons, authentic nomad culture and dark starry skies close to the capital. Best from June to September. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: Jun-Sep for green grassland and wildflowers • Fitness level: easy; mostly driving with light walking and cultural activities • Large day-night temperature swing: bring a warm jacket or light down even in summer; nights can drop to about 10C • Sun protection and water essential; few toilets out on the open steppe • The bonfire party and some shows may be cancelled in bad weather or for group-size/policy reasons • Off-road routes are adjusted on the day by local herders and conditions

Day 1: Beijing to Duolun | Mongol Culture & Bonfire Banquet

Meet at the designated point in Beijing at 07:30 and head north toward Duolun on the southern edge of the Hunshandake sands, your guide sharing the plan and running ice-breakers as the scenery shifts to grassland; you reach Datan town around midday for a free lunch, then continue to Duolun county to check in and rest. In the afternoon you visit a Mongol settlement to experience the nomads' welcome rituals: a horsemanship show stages the epic of the steppe with dazzling trick riding and horse-and-rider unity, while a Mongolian-language class introduces the lilting vowel harmony of the tongue and a dance lesson has you stamping out the rhythms of Mongol folk dance. In the evening you sit down to a Mongolian 'zhama' banquet, a sumptuous court-style feast of hand-held mutton, dairy delicacies and live song-and-dance, followed by a bonfire party where you sing and dance beneath a sky of stars. Drive: about 420km, roughly 5 hours. Elevation: about 1,400m. Meals: dinner included. Overnight: 4-star hotel in Duolun.

Day 2: Off-Road to Zhenglan | Herder Home & Steppe Lakes

After breakfast you drive out and transfer to off-road vehicles for a full day crossing the patchwork where the southern Mongol steppe meets the Hunshandake sands, a striking landscape of half grassland, half desert. You reach the natural lake of Dote Nur, its water deep blue with the occasional water-bird skimming past, and can stroll the shore or fly a kite for the simple joy of it. At midday you enter the felt yurt of a herder named Tianga for a home-style Mongol meal of milk tea, fried millet and hand-held mutton, chatting about nomadic life and feeling the warmth of herder hospitality. In the afternoon you continue to two more pristine sights, the quiet expanse of Hongtu Nur and the winding Wenhui River, walking and photographing amid grass like a green carpet strewn with wildflowers, then cross the core of the Wayaotan grassland with its endless horizon where you can run free or simply sit and take in the vastness. Back in town you are free to wander the Duolun night market for grassland snacks. Drive: about 200km off-road, 5-6 hours. Meals: breakfast and herder lunch included. Overnight: 4-star hotel in Duolun.

Day 3: Jinlianchuan Heritage | Return to Beijing

After breakfast you drive to the Xilingol Cultural Heritage Museum, whose red walls and viewing platform make a striking photo stop, and follow a guide to delve into the heritage of the birthplace of Mongol-Yuan culture, sensing the thousand-year legacy of the Jinlianchuan grassland where the Yuan summer capital once stood. You then bid farewell to the steppe and begin the return, with lunch in Zhenglan Banner or Datan town, reaching the designated meeting point in Beijing around 18:00 where the tour concludes. Drive: about 420km, roughly 5 hours. Elevation: about 1,400m. Meals: breakfast included. Overnight: not included (tour ends in Beijing).
