Overview
A three-day autumn-gold trek through Altai birch forests linking storybook Tuva villages with China's most luminous alpine lake.
About This Tour
Tucked into the far northern corner of Xinjiang where China meets Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia, the Kanas region delivers the kind of autumn colour normally reserved for Tibet or the Canadian Rockies. This three-day trek links the photogenic Tuva and Kazakh log-cabin villages of Hemu and Baihaba with the milky turquoise water of Kanas Lake, walking through golden Siberian larch and birch forest, riverside meadows and low ridges with constant views of the snow-streaked Altai peaks. The trail is well established and the scenery genuinely world-class, yet the area sees very few Western visitors, so you trek among grazing horses and woodsmoke rather than crowds. Comfortable village guesthouses, short-to-moderate daily distances and a relatively low altitude (around 1,300-2,000 m) make this an accessible introduction to Chinese trekking for reasonably fit walkers, families and photographers alike. Because Kanas sits in a sensitive border zone, the route is highly seasonal and requires a border-area permit, both of which we arrange for you. This is a private tour priced per person. Best experienced in the brief, blazing window of late September to mid-October. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and border-area regulations. Good to know: • Best season: late September to mid-October for peak autumn colour; the route operates seasonally and is closed/unsuitable in deep winter • Border permit: Kanas lies in a restricted border zone — a border-area permit is mandatory and arranged by us; bring your original passport • Fitness level: moderate; 3-6 hrs walking per day on good trails with gentle gradients • Altitude: low, roughly 1,300-2,000 m, so altitude sickness is not a concern • Weather: autumn days are crisp but nights can drop near freezing — bring warm layers, hat and gloves • Access: the nearest airport is Kanas/Burqin; expect long but scenic drives to reach the trailheads
Itinerary
1
Day 1: Hemu Village|Tuva Hamlet & Forest Ridge
After transferring into the scenic area, we begin at Hemu (approx. 1,300 m), the most beautiful of the Tuva log-cabin villages, scattered across a river valley below larch-clad slopes. Today's warm-up walk covers about 8-10 km over 3-4 hrs on well-trodden forest and meadow paths, climbing the Hemu viewpoint ridge for the classic panorama of smoke curling above wooden rooftops with golden birch and snow peaks behind. We wander between grazing horses and split-rail fences, crossing wooden bridges over the clear Hemu River and pausing for tea with a Tuva family. Lunch is a packed trail picnic; dinner features local lamb back at the village. Overnight in a comfortable Hemu guesthouse. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included.

Day 2: Hemu to Kanas|Birch Forest Traverse to the Lake
The signature trekking day. We leave Hemu on foot and traverse roughly 14-16 km over 5-6 hrs, following river valleys and a low forested ridge that connects the Hemu basin to the Kanas Lake catchment, with a cumulative ascent of around 500 m through blazing Siberian larch and white birch. The trail opens repeatedly onto meadows and overlooks, and on clear mornings the distant 4,000 m Altai summit Friendship Peak glints to the north. We reach the upper reaches of Kanas in the afternoon, transferring the final stretch by park shuttle where required. Lunch is a trail picnic; dinner at our lakeside-area guesthouse. Overnight near Kanas Lake (approx. 1,400 m). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included.

Day 3: Kanas Lake|Viewpoints, Moon Bay & Departure
Our final morning explores the lake itself, often at its most magical with mist rising off milky turquoise water. We walk the boardwalk and forest trails to Fish-Watching Pavilion high on the ridge for the full sweep of the eight-bend lake, then descend past the celebrated curves of Moon Bay, Sleeping Dragon Bay and Immortal Bay along the Kanas River — an easy 6-8 km over 3 hrs with minimal climbing. After a final riverside lunch we exit the scenic area and transfer to Kanas/Burqin airport or your onward connection, carrying images of one of China's most luminous and least-known landscapes. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch included. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and border-area regulations.
