Overview

Retrace explorer Joseph Rock's legendary 1928 route through Yading, crossing a 4,900m pass beneath three sacred snow peaks in the heart of the Tibetan east.

About This Tour

Named for the Austrian-American explorer Joseph Rock, whose 1928 dispatches in National Geographic introduced this hidden kingdom to the West and inspired the Shangri-La legend, the Rock Route is one of China's world-class alpine traverses. It threads the Yading Nature Reserve in far western Sichuan, encircling three sacred snow mountains revered by Tibetans: Chenrezig (6,032m), Jambeyang (5,958m) and Chana Dorje (5,958m). Over five days you trek through old-growth forest, golden larch, alpine meadows and a string of glacial lakes, crossing the demanding Russian Pass and a 4,900m col with the holy peaks filling the horizon. This is a genuine high-altitude wilderness expedition with camping and basic guesthouse nights, full oxygen and first-aid support, and pack-animal assistance. It suits experienced, well-acclimatized hikers seeking grandeur few outsiders ever witness. Best from late May to June and September to mid-October, when meadows bloom or larches turn gold. This private tour is priced per person with a professional English-speaking guide and high-altitude safety support. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and border-area regulations. Good to know: • Best season: late May-June and September-mid October; the reserve can close in heavy snow and the high passes are unsafe in mid-winter • Fitness level: Challenging; expect 6-9 hours of daily trekking at altitude with one 4,900m pass and the Russian Pass crossing • Altitude: The route stays mostly above 4,000m and tops out around 4,900m; prior acclimatization in Daocheng (around 3,750m) is essential and oxygen is carried • High-altitude risk: A pre-trip night in Shangri-La Town (about 2,900m) plus a Daocheng acclimatization day are built in; consult your doctor and consider acetazolamide • Pack a 4-season sleeping bag, warm layers, waterproof boots and sun protection; private tour priced per person

Itinerary

1

Day 1: Arrive Shangri-La Town & Acclimatize|Gateway to Yading

We meet in Shangri-La Town (Riwa, about 2,900m), the gateway settlement at the entrance to the Yading Nature Reserve, reached by a scenic mountain drive from Daocheng Yading Airport (roughly 130km, 3 hours). Today is deliberately easy to begin acclimatization after the altitude gain: a guide briefing covers the route, safety, oxygen use and symptoms of altitude sickness, and we check personal and group gear. Time permitting, we take a gentle warm-up stroll along the river and through the small town to keep the body moving without overexertion. Hydration and a slow pace are emphasized from the outset. Overnight in a comfortable guesthouse in Shangri-La Town. Dinner included; the day prioritizes rest and acclimatization over distance.
2

Day 2: Yading Reserve to Luorong Pasture|Beneath Chenrezig

We take the reserve shuttle up to Chonggu Monastery (about 3,900m) and begin trekking on foot toward the Luorong Pasture, a broad meadow basin at roughly 4,150m directly beneath Chenrezig (6,032m), the highest of the three sacred peaks. The walk covers around 7km over 3-4 hours with gentle cumulative ascent through pine forest, past Pearl Lake and grazing yaks, easing the body further into altitude. The afternoon offers our first close encounters with glaciers and the holy summit looming overhead, and time to scout the next day's high climb. This shorter day continues the acclimatization plan while delivering spectacular scenery. Overnight in basic guesthouse or camp at Luorong. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.
3

Day 3: Russian Pass & The Five-Color Lake|The Crux Day

The hardest and most rewarding day. From Luorong we climb steeply toward the high country, ascending roughly 750m over rock and scree to cross the Russian Pass (around 4,700m), so named for early Russian surveyors. The trail then continues to a 4,900m col with jaw-dropping panoramas of Jambeyang (5,958m) and Chana Dorje, before reaching the sacred glacial tarns: Milk Lake (around 4,600m) and the shimmering Five-Color Lake. Expect about 12-15km over 7-9 demanding hours with significant ascent and descent on uneven ground at extreme altitude; we move slowly with oxygen on hand. The day's vistas of all three holy mountains are the heart of the Rock Route. We descend to camp at a high meadow. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.
4

Day 4: Traverse to Sangdui Valley|Forest, Larch and Meadows

Leaving the high lakes, we trek out of the alpine zone on the classic Rock traverse, descending through golden larch forest, rhododendron thickets and rolling meadows toward the Sangdui valley on the reserve's eastern flank. The route covers roughly 14-16km over 6-8 hours, losing around 900m of elevation as terrain softens from rock to forest trail, with frequent backward views of the receding snow peaks and chances to spot blue sheep and Tibetan pheasant. We pass remote herders' encampments and mani-stone cairns marking the old pilgrim path. The walking is long but more forgiving than the crux day. Overnight camp or simple guesthouse near the valley floor. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.
5

Day 5: Trek Out & Transfer|Daocheng Highlands

Our final morning completes the traverse on gentler trails out to the road head, a walk of about 8km over 3-4 hours through meadow and scattered forest, with one last look back at the three sacred mountains. Our vehicle meets us for the drive across the high Haizishan plateau toward Daocheng (around 3,750m), roughly 80-110km depending on the exit point, with stops at viewpoints over the ancient glacial lakes and barley fields. We celebrate the completion of one of China's great alpine traverses and transfer to Daocheng Yading Airport or a Daocheng hotel for onward travel. Breakfast and a celebratory lunch included; trek concludes by afternoon.
