My camera roll says the Great Wall was the big moment. My actual favourite was the trail; it felt less obvious and more personal.
What helped was simple: there was no pressure to turn every pause into a photo stop. We could catch our breath, look around and move when ready. I would still leave extra time for the trail.
Looking back, my legs noticed the climbs the next morning. I would still do the same route, just with lighter shoes and fewer things in my daypack. I would keep the Beijing and Shanghai outline as it was.
Looking back, this wasn't a “see everything” tour, and that was a strength. The time around the trail felt specific to Beijing and Shanghai, not interchangeable with another city.
Honestly, worth doing for the Great Wall; worth remembering for the small stops in between.
