Sleeping inside a Dong minority village near Zhaoxing was the most authentic experience of our whole China trip. The five drum towers lit up at dusk, the wind-rain bridges over the stream, and then hearing the famous Dong choir sing in the evening gave me goosebumps. The Tang'an terraced rice fields the next morning were stunning. Two days I'll treasure.
Zhaoxing is one of China's largest Dong villages and staying overnight rather than just passing through made all the difference. The wind-rain bridges and drum towers are remarkable architecture, all built without nails. The walk up to the Tang'an terraces gave beautiful views over the valley. A real off-the-beaten-track gem.
Lovely two days immersed in Dong culture from Liping. The great Dong choir tradition was the surprise highlight, such haunting harmonies. Drum towers and bridges everywhere you look. Accommodation in the village is basic but that's part of the charm. Guide explained the customs well.
If you want the real rural China away from crowds, this is it. Zhaoxing's drum towers and wind-rain bridges are extraordinary, and the Tang'an rice terraces at sunrise were magical. Hearing the Dong singers perform locally, not for tour buses, felt genuine and moving.
