4-Day Kanas Lake Autumn Photography Tour from Urumqi

Came for the autumn colours and Kanas Lake at peak season is a photographer's dream. The golden birch forests reflected in that turquoise water, with snow on the peaks behind, is hard to believe is real. Four days from Urumqi to Burqin gave us time at multiple viewpoints, Fairy Bay and the Moon Bay bend especially.

Our guide knew exactly where the morning light hit and got us to the lake before sunrise on the second day. The mist coming off the water was magical. We also stopped at a Tuvan village and shared milk tea with a local family. The long drive from Urumqi is real but the scenery makes it part of the trip.

Photography focused and it showed. The driver was patient every time I yelled to pull over for a shot. Kanas Nature Reserve is enormous and having a private vehicle meant we covered far more than the bus tour groups stuck on a schedule. Burqin's coloured beach at sunset was an unexpected bonus.

Stunning autumn landscapes in Xinjiang's far north. Four days is about right, though the distances mean some long days in the car. Tuvan villages were charming. Bring warm layers, mornings by the lake are freezing even in early October. Guide spoke good English and handled all the reserve entries.

I have travelled a lot and Kanas in autumn is genuinely one of the most beautiful places I have seen. The birch forests turning gold against the mountain reflections do not photograph as well as they look in person, and they photograph incredibly.
