Kaili Miao New Year Festival 3-Day Tour (Nov-Dec Lunar Window)

I planned my whole China trip around catching Miao New Year and it absolutely delivered. The silver headdresses on the women are unbelievable in person, the weight of them, the way they catch the light during the dancing. We visited three different villages around Kaili and each had its own character. This is not a tourist show, it is the real festival.

The lusheng pipe dancing in the village square went on for hours and the whole community was there. Our guide was Miao herself and translated the songs and customs, which made it so much richer. The bullfight (buffalo against buffalo, no harm done) drew a massive crowd of locals. Three days flew by.

Booking this is tricky because it only runs in the lunar Nov-Dec window, so plan ahead. Worth every bit of the effort. Being a private group meant we could linger at a family home for tea while the parade reassembled. Felt like a guest, not a spectator.

An extraordinary cultural experience around Kaili. The festival days were chaotic in the best way. Be prepared for cold and basic facilities in the villages, this is rural Guizhou. The silver and the music more than make up for the rough edges.
