Volcanic crater lake on the China–North Korea border. Two-day private tour from Yanji to Changbaishan's Tianchi summit, hot springs, and Korean-Chinese countryside.
Über diese Tour
Tianchi — Heaven Lake — is a 2,000-meter-high volcanic crater lake that straddles the border between China and North Korea. When the weather cooperates, the view from the rim is one of the most striking landscapes in northeast Asia: a perfectly round, deep-blue lake cradled by black-rock peaks, with the other shore technically in DPRK territory. The catch is weather. The summit is cloud-bound roughly half the time year-round, and there's no way to predict from the bottom whether the lake will be visible until you get up there.
This two-day private tour starts in Yanji (the capital of the Korean-Chinese autonomous prefecture, reachable by direct flight from Beijing, Shanghai, and Seoul). Your English-speaking guide handles the multi-vehicle ascent — entry by park shuttle and the final SUV switchback up to the rim — plus the lower-elevation highlights: the volcanic waterfall, the underground forest, and the natural hot springs at the foot of the mountain. Overnight is in a comfortable hotel near the park gate so you have flexibility to attempt Tianchi twice if Day 1 is fogged in.
Day-by-day:
- Day 1 — 08:00 Pickup at Yanji hotel or airport; drive 3 hours to Changbaishan north gate; enter the park; visit the Changbai Waterfall (China's tallest volcanic waterfall) and underground forest; first attempt at the Tianchi summit by SUV switchback; afternoon soak at the hot-spring pools; overnight near the park gate
- Day 2 — 07:00 Early second Tianchi attempt if weather looks clearer (or skipped if Day 1 succeeded); breakfast at the hotel; visit a Korean-Chinese village for lunch (kimchi, cold noodles, grilled meats); 14:00 Drive back to Yanji; 17:00 Drop-off at airport or hotel
Who this is for: Nature travelers, geology buffs, and anyone fascinated by the China–North Korea borderland. Hikers will appreciate the volcanic scenery and the summit altitude (~2,700m at the lake rim). Korean-Chinese food fans get a bonus: Yanji is the unofficial capital of Korean cuisine in China.
Logistics: Best July–September (warmest, longest clearest spells); the park stays open in winter with frozen-lake views, but ascent roads are weather-restricted. The crater lake is visible roughly 50% of summer days — we plan two attempts but cannot guarantee a clear view. Park rules: short summit visit (~30 min on the rim) because of altitude and wind. Bring a warm layer even in July — the summit can be 10°C colder than the valley.
Local Roads. Global Eyes. We have Korean-Chinese guides based in Yanji who know both the park rangers and the best village restaurants. Want to add Hunchun (the Russia-DPRK-China tripoint) or extend with Harbin? WhatsApp +86 139 1764 3020 or [email protected].
