Überblick
Two days in Xiapu shooting tidal mudflats at sunrise and sunset. Bamboo-pole fishing scenes, fishing village, English-speaking guide. Peak Sept-Nov + March-May.
Über diese Tour
Xiapu is the most photographed coastline in China you've never heard of. Three hours up the coast from Fuzhou, this rural Fujianese county has 400 km of tidal mudflats — endless wet sand patterns at low tide, bamboo-pole seaweed farms standing in geometric grids, and silhouetted fishermen poling sampans across the gold of sunrise or sunset. Chinese landscape photographers have been making the pilgrimage here for twenty years; the foreign photography market is still mostly unaware. Peak shooting months are September to November and March to May, when the tides and light line up.
This two-day tour is built around shooting, not sightseeing. You'll work with an English-speaking guide-fixer who knows which viewpoint to be at for sunrise vs. sunset on any given tide table, and we pre-arrange local fishermen at certain locations so you get the classic bamboo-pole-and-sampan silhouettes without chasing them yourself. You sleep one night in a local guesthouse close to the morning shooting points so you're not driving an hour in the dark.
Day 1 — afternoon arrival and sunset shoot:
- 13:00 — Pickup from your Fuzhou hotel or Xiapu high-speed rail station
- 14:00 — Transfer to Xiapu coast (about 1 hour from Xiapu station; 3 hours from Fuzhou)
- 15:30 — Check into a local guesthouse close to the coast
- 16:30 — Drive to the sunset viewpoint (Beiqi, Xiaohao, or Dongbi depending on tide)
- 17:00 — Set up; coordinate with a local fisherman to pole his sampan across the mudflat at golden hour
- 19:00 — Local seafood dinner; review of the day's shots with your guide
Day 2 — sunrise shoot and fishing village:
- 04:30 — Early wake-up; drive to the sunrise viewpoint (Yantian or Sandujia)
- 05:30 — Sunrise shoot: bamboo-pole grids, mist over the mudflats, fishermen at first light
- 08:00 — Breakfast back at the guesthouse
- 10:00 — Visit a working fishing village; portrait opportunities with permission
- 12:30 — Local lunch
- 14:00 — Optional second short shoot at a quieter mudflat location
- 16:00 — Drive back to Xiapu station or Fuzhou hotel
Who this is for: Serious photographers who already know how to use a tripod, enthusiast travel photographers wanting one specialist trip on a longer China itinerary. Min age 8. The early-morning wake-up is genuinely early — this is not a casual scenic tour.
Logistics: Private vehicle with driver for 2 days, English-speaking guide-fixer, one night in a local guesthouse close to the coast, all listed meals, coordination with local fishermen at viewpoints, and viewpoint entrance fees included. Bring a tripod, a wide and a telephoto, and warm layers for the pre-dawn wait.
