My camera roll says Hongcun was the big moment. My actual favourite was Huangshan; it felt less obvious and more personal.
What helped was simple: there was no theatrical “VIP” treatment, just useful organisation and a guide who noticed when we needed a pause. That suited us. The time around Hongcun was not the part I would cut.
Looking back, I carried more than I needed. Water, a light layer and a small power bank would have covered the whole day. With 3 days to work with, the balance felt sensible.
Looking back, this felt like travelling with someone who knew the area, not following a person holding a flag. That difference showed most at Huangshan.
