The part around the Forbidden City was unhurried, which mattered more to me than squeezing in one more stop. Tiananmen Square was a good counterpoint. The time around the Forbidden City was not the part I would cut.
What helped was simple: our guide read the pace well. We got the background when it helped, then space to explore instead of a running lecture. I would still leave extra time for Tiananmen Square.
Looking back, I would check the weather and dress in layers. We moved between the vehicle, open spaces and indoor sites often enough to notice the difference. My only advice is not to shorten the time at Tiananmen Square.
Looking back, I would book this again for the pacing, not because every stop was spectacular. The ordinary transitions made Beijing feel like a place rather than a set of postcards. I would keep the Beijing outline as it was.
