Honestly, I booked with two dishes in mind and left with a longer list. The hutong lanes gave the route a clear sense of place rather than feeling like random snacks.
Translation mattered as much as the cooking in Beijing. We could ask the host ordinary questions instead of relying on a rehearsed demonstration.
A practical note: one Beijing dish was outside my comfort zone, which was half the reason I booked. Asking how locals eat it made the stop much more interesting.
In hindsight, I liked this more a day later, when I looked back through my photos and realised how different Beijing and the hutong lanes had felt.
I booked mainly for the hutong lanes. I was glad I did because of Beijing.
