My camera roll says the Great Wall was the big moment. My actual favourite was Beijing, Xi'an and Datong; it felt less obvious and more personal.
What helped was simple: our questions wandered well beyond the standard facts, and the guide stayed with them. That made the time at Beijing, Xi'an and Datong much more interesting.
Looking back, I would check the weather and dress in layers. We moved between the vehicle, open spaces and indoor sites often enough to notice the difference. I would still leave extra time for the Great Wall.
Looking back, I would book this again for the pacing, not because every stop was spectacular. The ordinary transitions made Beijing, Xi'an and Datong feel like a place rather than a set of postcards.
In short, worth doing for the Great Wall; worth remembering for the small stops in between.
