Day Tour to Tianshan Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) from Urumqi

Urumqi is the most landlocked city on Earth, and ninety minutes away there's a snow-fed alpine lake sitting under a 5,400 m peak. Tianshan Tianchi — Heavenly Lake — is a glacial lake at about 1,900 m above sea level in the Bogda range of the eastern Tianshan mountains. UNESCO listed the wider Xinjiang Tianshan area as a World Natural Heritage site in 2013. The water is dark green, the spruce forests around it smell of resin, and on clear days the snow cone of Bogda Peak reflects in the lake. It's the easiest big-nature day trip in northern Xinjiang and a perfect acclimatisation day if you're heading on to higher places.

This is a private day tour from Urumqi with a licensed English-speaking guide. We pace it slowly so you get the morning light at the lake before the domestic tour groups arrive in force. The walking is easy — mostly flat boardwalks and a couple of viewpoint platforms — and the altitude is gentle enough for kids and grandparents alike.

Itinerary (approximate):

• 08:00 — Pickup from your Urumqi hotel
• 09:30 — Arrive at the Tianchi Heavenly Lake scenic area gate; transfer to the internal eco-shuttle bus
• 10:00 — Lakeside walk along the main boardwalk with the Bogda Peak panorama; photo stops at the classic viewpoints
• 12:00 — Lunch break at a lakeside restaurant (Xinjiang cuisine — laghman noodles, lamb skewers, naan; pay on your own)
• 13:30 — Optional uphill walk to a higher viewing platform, or a relaxed second loop of the lake
• 15:30 — Return shuttle to the gate
• 17:00 — Drop-off at your Urumqi hotel
