3-hour walking food tour of Guangzhou's Liwan old town. 6+ tastings: morning yum cha, wet market, traditional desserts. Eat like a Cantonese auntie.

Über diese Tour

Guangzhou invented Cantonese food. Eat it where it was born. Long before dim sum landed in Hong Kong or San Francisco, it was being rolled out on bamboo trolleys in the tea houses of Guangzhou's Liwan district — the old town along the Pearl River where Cantonese cuisine has been refined for 1,000 years. This is not a Hong Kong dim sum tour. The flavors here are saltier, the broths longer-simmered, the pace slower. Locals say 'food in Guangzhou, taste in Xiguan' — and Xiguan is Liwan.

This 3-hour morning walking tour is led by a Cantonese-speaking local foodie who actually grew up eating these dishes. We hit 6+ tastings across the Liwan / Shangxiajiu area, walking 2-3 km total through old Lingnan-style colonnaded streets between bites. You'll order in the back-rooms tourists never enter, taste varieties that don't appear on the English menu, and learn the local rules — like why Cantonese tea is brewed three times, or why the auntie at the wet market is annoyed at your hesitation.

Tour itinerary (3 hours, 6+ tastings, ~2.5 km walking):

  • 09:30 — Meet at Gongyuanqian Metro Station (Line 1/2 interchange, central Guangzhou). Quick orientation over Yangcheng-style morning coffee
  • 09:45 — Stop 1: Old-school yum cha tea house. Order har gow (shrimp dumpling), siu mai (pork-shrimp dumpling), cheung fun (silk rice rolls), char siu bao (BBQ pork bun). Learn the 'finger tap' tea etiquette
  • 10:30 — Stop 2: Liwan wet market walkabout. See live seafood (you'll never look at fish counters the same), Cantonese herbal-soup ingredients, dried goods. Optional smell-tests of the legendary ones (preserved tofu, salted egg yolks)
  • 11:00 — Stop 3: Bamboo-pole noodle shop. Wonton noodles or beef brisket noodles made with hand-pressed dough (a 100-year-old technique using a bamboo pole)
  • 11:30 — Stop 4: Old soup shop. Try a small bowl of double-boiled herbal soup (老火汤) — winter melon + dried fish, or watercress + pork bones. Cantonese 'medicine in a bowl'
  • 12:00 — Stop 5: Traditional sweets parlor. Steamed milk pudding (双皮奶), red bean tang yuan, mango sago. Plus a side of Cantonese coffee history
  • 12:30 — Tour ends at Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street. Optional: your guide can point you toward an authentic siu mei (BBQ meat) shop for lunch later

Who this is for: Food travelers, anyone tired of dim sum that's been sanitized for hotel restaurants, photographers (the wet market alone is worth the tour), first-time Guangzhou visitors who want a 'real city' first impression before tackling the skyscrapers.

Dietary notes: Pescatarian-friendly with advance notice (Cantonese cuisine is seafood-heavy). Vegetarian is harder but possible — let us know when booking. Mild spice level throughout (Cantonese cooking is not spicy).
