Zhangbi Ancient Castle (45km from Pingyao) is a Sui-Tang dynasty military fortress with the longest preserved underground defensive tunnel network in China — 10km of corridors over 3 levels, dug for ambushes and supply storage. Above-ground: walled village with the Tang-era Empty Wang Temple, Ming-dynasty Liuyi Temple, and the original twelve zodiac shrines.
