One detail from the day: the stop I expected to like least turned into the one we discussed afterward. That is the advantage of tasting with someone who can explain what is in front of you. I would rather keep the pause at the river cruise than add another stop.
The useful part in Shanghai was having someone explain how to order the same dishes later. I left with names in my phone, not just photos. With 4 hours to work with, the balance felt sensible.
A practical note: one Shanghai dish was outside my comfort zone, which was half the reason I booked. Asking how locals eat it made the stop much more interesting. I would keep the Shanghai outline as it was.
In hindsight, the route made more sense once we were on it. Time at Shanghai set the pace, while the river cruise gave us a reason to slow down.
The guide knew when to explain and when to stop talking. Rare, and appreciated. For 4 hours around Shanghai, the pace felt about right.
