Private day trip from Guilin into the 600-year-old Longji terraces. Zhuang and Yao minority villages, Ping'an or Jinkeng/Dazhai viewpoints, English-speaking guide.
Über diese Tour
Stand on a mountainside where the rice has been growing for six hundred years. The Longji (Dragon's Backbone) terraces climb the ridges of Longsheng County in northern Guangxi, carved field by field by the Zhuang and Yao minorities starting in the Yuan dynasty. From the upper viewpoints the slopes look like contour lines on a topographic map — green in summer, gold in October, mirrored water in spring. It is one of the few places in China where a working farming landscape and a living minority culture share the same valley.
This private day tour pulls you out of Guilin's karst-and-noodle-shop circuit and up into the mountains. Your English-speaking guide chooses between the two main viewpoint clusters depending on weather and your fitness: Ping'an Village (Zhuang, easier paths, classic "Seven Stars with Moon" lookout) or Jinkeng / Dazhai (Yao, steeper, more dramatic, served by a cable car). You will walk between traditional wooden stilt houses, share lunch in a village home, and learn how the long-haired Yao women still keep a tradition of cutting their hair only once in their lifetime.
Day 1 itinerary:
- 07:30 — Pickup from your Guilin hotel
- 10:00 — Arrive at the Longji scenic area; short transfer up to your chosen viewpoint cluster
- 10:30 — Walk the terrace paths between Zhuang or Yao villages with your guide (~2 hours, easy to moderate)
- 12:30 — Lunch in a village family home: bamboo-tube rice, smoked pork, mountain greens
- 14:00 — Continue to a higher viewpoint for the panorama shot of the layered fields
- 15:30 — Optional cultural stop in a Yao village to meet the long-haired women
- 16:30 — Depart back toward Guilin
- 19:00 — Drop-off at your Guilin hotel
Who this is for: Travelers tired of Guilin's standard Li River circuit, photographers chasing layered light, anyone curious about southern China's minority cultures, families with kids age 5+ who can handle 2 hours of uphill walking.
Logistics: Private air-conditioned vehicle, English-speaking guide, all entrance tickets, village lunch, and one cable-car ride (Jinkeng option) included. Wear sturdy shoes; the stone paths can be slippery after rain. Pickup window 07:00–08:00 from central Guilin hotels.

One of the best days of our trip. China is a must, and the private format is so much better.
The guide's knowledge of China was outstanding, and everything ran exactly on time.
The local insights in China made the difference; places we would never have found on our own.
