Beijing has a four-season continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. The result: two clearly ideal windows and a few dates to avoid.
The best times to visit Beijing are spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October): clear skies, 10–25°C, and the Great Wall at its most beautiful. Summer is hot and crowded; winter is cold but magical and cheap.
Late September to early November brings golden foliage and the clearest air. Spring is a close second. Winter rewards the brave with snow-dusted ramparts and almost no crowds.
Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb), Golden Week (Oct 1–7) and Labour Day (early May) send domestic crowds and prices soaring — book ahead or avoid.
