Weishan is a Ming-dynasty walled town an hour south of Dali — quiet, unrestored, real. Half-day private tour with English guide, market lanes, courtyard tea house.
Über diese Tour
An hour south of Dali, there's a walled town that almost no foreign traveler has heard of. Weishan was the original capital of the 7th–9th-century Nanzhao kingdom — the local power that controlled much of Yunnan before the Mongols rolled in — and the current grid of streets, the gate tower, and the bell-and-drum towers are early Ming. The town never got the Lijiang treatment. There are no light shows, no boutique-bar streets, no "please pay 100 RMB to enter" gates. Just a working old town where the herbalist still sells Chinese medicine roots and the bakery still sells the same shaobing they did in 1985.
This half-day private tour drives you down from Dali (about 1 hour 15 minutes), parks outside the south gate, and walks you through the old town with an English-speaking guide. You'll see the four-way drum tower at the centre of the grid, drift through the produce market, drink tea in a Qing-era courtyard, and visit a small Hui-Muslim quarter on the north side (Weishan has a strong Muslim minority — the local stewed beef is famous in Yunnan). Back in Dali by mid-afternoon.
Itinerary:
- 08:30 — Pickup from your Dali hotel
- 09:45 — Arrive Weishan south gate; start walking tour
- 10:00 — Walk the main north-south axis to the central Gongchen Tower drum tower
- 10:45 — Wander the produce and herbalist market lanes; meet a herbalist if shop is open
- 11:30 — Tea break in a Qing-dynasty courtyard tea house
- 12:15 — Lunch at a Hui-Muslim eatery — Weishan stewed beef, hand-pulled noodles, sweet milk-curd
- 13:30 — Walk to the north gate via the small Muslim quarter; visit a working mosque from outside (we don't go in unprepared)
- 14:00 — Drive back toward Dali
- 15:30 — Drop-off at your Dali hotel
Who this is for: Slow travelers, photographers, anyone burnt out on the more famous Yunnan old towns. Families with kids age 5+. No altitude issues (Weishan is at 1,700 m), no hiking — flat cobblestone streets only.
Logistics: Private vehicle Dali–Weishan–Dali. English-speaking guide. Cash for the market is useful but most stalls now take mobile pay. Wear comfortable shoes — cobblestones. Pairs nicely with a Shaxi or Erhai Lake day on a longer Dali itinerary.
Local Roads. Global Eyes. We're a Beijing-licensed inbound operator with Bai- and Hui-speaking guides in Dali prefecture. Questions before you book? WhatsApp +86 139 1764 3020 or [email protected].
