Resumen
Five days across Hulunbuir's vast green grassland — yurt stays, horse pastures, border-river drives, Mongolian feasts. Private guided self-drive from Hailar, June–August peak.
Sobre este tour
Imagine 250,000 square kilometers of green, rolling to the horizon, with not a fence in sight. Hulunbuir is the largest and best-preserved grassland in China — a high-altitude meadow ecosystem on the Mongolian border where ethnic Mongol herders still move their livestock by season, and where a paved road can carry you for two hours without passing another car. June through August is the only window the grass is truly green; the rest of the year it's brown, frozen, or under snow.
This five-day private self-drive tour starts in Hailar (the regional hub, well connected by air from Beijing and Hohhot). You'll drive a comfortable SUV with your English-speaking guide leading in a separate vehicle, following the classic Hulunbuir northern loop: open grassland, a Mongolian yurt camp overnight, the Russian-border river town of Shiwei, the forested Greater Khingan range, and the Olunchun and Buryat ethnic regions. Distances are big — expect 200–400 km driving days — but the scenery rewards every hour.
Day-by-day:
- Day 1 — 09:00 Pickup at Hailar hotel or airport; drive north onto the grassland; afternoon at a herder family for milk tea and lamb skewers; overnight at a Mongolian yurt camp under enormous stars
- Day 2 — 08:30 Sunrise on the grassland; drive the Hulun Lake shoreline; horse riding session at an open pasture; overnight in a Russian-style log inn near the Argun border river
- Day 3 — 09:00 Continue along the Sino-Russian border road; stop at the village viewpoint over the river; afternoon arrive Shiwei (a small ethnic-Russian frontier town); overnight in Shiwei
- Day 4 — 09:00 Cross into the Greater Khingan forests; birch groves and reindeer herder visit; overnight in a forest-edge lodge
- Day 5 — 09:00 Drive back south across the grassland; final Mongolian feast lunch; 17:00 Return to Hailar airport or hotel
Who this is for: Travelers who want big-sky landscape, not city sightseeing. Photographers, road-trip lovers, families with curious kids 6+, and anyone who wants to see a corner of China most foreigners never reach. Comfortable with simple lodging — yurts and rural inns have heat and beds, but not five-star plumbing.
Logistics: Best June through August (green grass, mild 15–25°C days, cool nights). Brutal winters down to -30°C make off-season trips impractical for most. Private SUV with guide-driver, all fuel and tolls included. Hailar has direct flights from Beijing (~2 hours) and Hohhot. Bring a windbreaker — the grassland is exposed and wind is constant.
