Resumen

Trek the last Shangri-La. 4-day private tour from Chengdu to Yading Nature Reserve: three sacred snow peaks, Milk Lake, Five-Color Lake at 4,700m altitude.

Sobre este tour

The last Shangri-La is a real place, and the road in still feels like a secret. Yading Nature Reserve in southern Sichuan wraps three sacred snow peaks — Chenrezig, Jampelyang and Chanadorje — around alpine meadows, glacial lakes and Tibetan villages that sit at 3,700 to 4,700 metres above sea level. Joseph Rock wrote about it in National Geographic in 1928 and the name Shangri-La travelled the world. The reserve has been protected for decades and remains one of the highest, quietest and most cinematic corners of the Tibetan Plateau accessible from a major Chinese city.

This is a private 4-day tour from Chengdu with a licensed English-speaking guide and a driver who knows the high passes. You'll cover roughly 800 km each way through the Hengduan mountains, sleep two nights inside the reserve area, and spend a full day above 4,000 m hiking to Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake beneath Jampelyang. Altitude is real — we build in a slower acclimatisation day in Daocheng before the high hike, carry oxygen in the vehicle, and pace the climb so you actually enjoy it instead of suffering it.

Day-by-day:

  • Day 1 — 07:00 pickup in Chengdu, drive west via Ya'an and the Erlang Mountain tunnel; overnight in Kangding (~2,560 m) to start gentle acclimatisation
  • Day 2 — Cross two high passes including Zheduo (~4,300 m); photo stops on the grasslands; arrive Daocheng (~3,750 m) by late afternoon; early dinner, early sleep
  • Day 3 — Enter Yading Nature Reserve; eco-bus to Chonggu Monastery viewpoint; hike or pony-ride toward Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake at ~4,600–4,700 m beneath Jampelyang (allow 6–8 hours, pace yourself); return to Daocheng for the night
  • Day 4 — Sunrise photo stop on the Daocheng plateau; long drive back to Chengdu via the high grasslands; arrive Chengdu by evening (or we can drop you at the airport for a late flight)

Who this is for: Travellers who want one big mountain experience in China without flying to Lhasa, photographers chasing the three sacred peaks, fit hikers comfortable with altitude effort. Not recommended for anyone with serious heart, lung or blood-pressure issues, or for young children. Minimum age 12.

Logistics: Private 4WD or comfortable van depending on party size. Three nights of clean local hotels (Kangding 1, Daocheng 2 — standard, not luxury; Yading area lodging is basic by design). Oxygen canisters and a basic first-aid kit in the vehicle. Reserve entry tickets and eco-bus included. Bring warm layers even in summer — pre-dawn at the lakes can drop below freezing. Foreign passport required at provincial checkpoints.
