For us, there are plenty of polished photos online; the useful surprise was having time at the Yungang Grottoes without being moved along every five minutes. I would still leave extra time for the Yungang Grottoes.
Practically speaking, the route through Datong could be awkward to arrange independently. Having one person keep the timing straight made the whole thing calmer. I would rather keep the pause at the Yungang Grottoes than add another stop.
Bring water and do not over-plan the evening afterward. 11 hours covered more ground than I expected. The time around the Yungang Grottoes was not the part I would cut.
Honestly, I would book this again for the pacing, not because every stop was spectacular. The ordinary transitions made Datong feel like a place rather than a set of postcards.
