Honestly, I had seen plenty of photos of Yu Garden. Being there was quieter and more absorbing than I expected, and I stopped checking my phone for a while.
We had enough information to understand Shanghai, but it never turned into a classroom. The balance felt natural. For 2 hours around Shanghai, the pace felt about right.
A practical note: the busiest place on the route was genuinely busy. Starting earlier would be my only change. I would rather keep the pause at Yu Garden than add another stop.
In hindsight, we booked because arranging Shanghai ourselves looked fiddly. We came away remembering the conversations as much as the places. For this itinerary, the number of stops was enough.
