3-Day Guilin Itinerary: Li River Cruise, Yangshuo & Rice Terraces

Your complete Guilin travel guide — China's most stunning karst landscape, immortalized on the 20 yuan banknote. Updated for 2026.

Why Guilin Is China's Most Beautiful Destination

Guilin's karst landscape — towering limestone peaks rising from emerald rivers and rice paddies — has inspired Chinese painters and poets for over a thousand years. The Chinese saying goes: "Guilin's scenery is the finest under heaven." Three days gives you the perfect Guilin itinerary covering the legendary Li River, the backpacker haven of Yangshuo, and the breathtaking Longji Rice Terraces.

Day 1: Li River Cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo

The Li River cruise is the crown jewel of any Guilin trip. Board a cruise boat in the morning and float 83 km downstream through a landscape of surreal beauty — sugar-loaf peaks, bamboo groves, water buffalo wading in shallows, and fishermen on bamboo rafts.

Key highlights along the route:

  • Elephant Trunk Hill — Guilin's iconic symbol, visible from the city.
  • Nine Horses Fresco Hill — A cliff face where locals see nine horses in the rock patterns.
  • Yellow Cloth Shoal — The scene on China's 20 yuan note. Have a bill ready for the photo.
  • Xingping Ancient Town — The most photogenic stretch of the entire river.

The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo takes about 4 hours. You'll arrive in Yangshuo by mid-afternoon — perfect timing to explore.

Pro tip: For a more intimate experience, skip the big tourist boats and take a private bamboo raft between Xingping and Yangdi. Same views, fraction of the crowds.

Day 2: Yangshuo — Cycling, Caves & Cooking Classes

Yangshuo is where the karst magic gets personal. This small town is surrounded by some of the most dramatic scenery in China, and the best way to explore is by bicycle or e-bike.

Morning: Cycle the Yulong River(遇龙河) countryside route. Quieter and more intimate than the Li River — bamboo rafts drift past ancient stone bridges while karst peaks tower on all sides. The 10 km route from Yulong Bridge to Gongnong Bridge is perfection.

Afternoon options:

  • Silver Cave (银子岩) — A spectacular illuminated limestone cave system stretching over 2 km underground.
  • Cooking class — Learn to make beer fish (啤酒鱼), Yangshuo's signature dish, at a local cooking school. One of the most popular activities in town.
  • Rock climbing — Yangshuo is Asia's top climbing destination, with routes for beginners to experts on the karst cliffs.

Evening: Stroll West Street(西街), Yangshuo's famous pedestrian street — restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and people-watching. For something special, watch the Impression Liu Sanjie outdoor light show, directed by Zhang Yimou and performed on the Li River with karst mountains as the backdrop.

Day 3: Longji Rice Terraces Day Trip

Drive 2.5 hours north from Guilin to the Longji Rice Terraces(龙脊梯田), also called the Dragon's Backbone. These 700-year-old terraces cascade down mountainsides in hypnotic curves, changing color with the seasons:

  • April–June: Flooded terraces reflect the sky like mirrors — the most photogenic season.
  • July–September: Lush green rice shoots cover every surface.
  • October: Golden harvest colors — equally stunning.
  • Winter: Occasional snow dusting the terraces — rare and magical.

Two main viewpoints: Ping'an(easier access, famous "Seven Stars Around the Moon" viewpoint) and Jinkeng(more dramatic, less crowded). Both involve moderate hiking — 30–60 minutes to reach the best viewpoints.

The terraces are home to the Zhuang and Yao ethnic minorities. Visit a Yao village to see their famous tradition: Yao women grow their hair past 1.8 meters and never cut it.

Beyond 3 Days: More Guilin Adventures

  • Reed Flute Cave (芦笛岩) — Guilin's most famous cave, illuminated with colorful lights. 240 million years of geological art.
  • Xingping sunrise — Wake up at 5 AM for the cormorant fisherman photo opportunity. The most iconic image of China.
  • Guilin to Zhangjiajie — 5 hours by bullet train to the Avatar mountains. Many travelers combine both destinations.

Getting to Guilin

  • By air: Guilin Liangjiang Airport (KWL) has direct flights from most Chinese cities and some international routes.
  • Beijing to Guilin: 3-hour flight or 10-hour bullet train (overnight option available).
  • Shanghai to Guilin: 2.5-hour flight or 9-hour bullet train.
