The Wang Family Compound (Wang Jia Da Yuan), 35km from Pingyao, is the largest preserved Qing-dynasty merchant residence in China — 25 hectares, 123 courtyards, 1,118 rooms, built over 300 years by the Wang clan that grew rich on tea trade. Locals call it Shanxi's answer to the Forbidden City. Morning at Pingyao city wall + Mingqing Street + Rishengchang, afternoon driving to Wang Compound for 2 hours of guided exploration of the High Family Courtyard (Gao Jia Yuan) and Red Gate Fort (Hong Men Bao).
