Changshu: Water Town & Classical Gardens Day Trip

Spend an unhurried day in Changshu, a graceful Jiangnan town that blends Song-dynasty heritage with classic water-town charm, on a private day trip from Shanghai. Your English-speaking guide and private car pick you up at your hotel and drive you out into the canal country of southern Jiangsu.

You begin at Fangta Park, home to the Square Pagoda (Chongjiao Xingfu Temple Pagoda) first built in 1130. Standing 67 metres tall with nine tiers, it is the landmark of old Changshu; alongside it you will find an ancient Song-era well and an 800-year-old ginkgo tree. A nearby reflecting pool offers a perfect mirror image of the pagoda.

From the park you stroll along Hedong Street, Tongjiang Road and Dongmen Avenue, the heart of Changshu's old town, where small bridges, flowing canals and quiet lanes capture the essence of Suzhou-style water-town life. You will have free time to enjoy lunch at a local spot in the lanes, with your guide on hand for recommendations.

In the afternoon, a short drive brings you to the adjoining Zeng and Zhao Gardens. These two neighbouring classical gardens are celebrated for their water features and for "borrowing" the scenery of nearby Yushan Mountain into their design, earning the praise "mountain colour and lake light in one garden". Zeng Garden was the residence of late-Qing novelist Zeng Pu; here you can wander at leisure or, as locals do, order a pot of tea and relax.

This is a calm, easy-paced cultural day with only gentle walking, no hiking involved. When the visit ends, your private car returns you comfortably to your Shanghai hotel.
