Half-Day Erhai Lake Cycling Tour from Dali Old Town

Erhai is Yunnan's beautiful inland sea — and the easiest day-cycling lake in China. Forty kilometres long, perfectly flat shore road, the Cangshan mountains rising on the west side, Bai-minority fishing villages strung along the east. The provincial government has built a continuous bike path the whole way around. You don't need to do all 130 km — half a day on the prettiest section is exactly enough.

This half-day private tour gets you a rental bike, an English-speaking local guide, and a curated 20-km section of the west shore between Dali Old Town and the Xizhou direction. You'll roll past Bai farmhouses with painted gable ends, stop at the famous "S-bend" lakeside viewpoint, eat lunch at a fisherman's family kitchen, and be back in Dali by mid-afternoon. Easy pace, no hills, frequent photo stops.

Itinerary:

• 09:00 — Meet your guide at the bike-rental shop just outside Dali Old Town's north gate
• 09:15 — Bike fitting (city cruisers and e-bikes both available), helmets and water
• 09:30 — Ride north along the lakeside path; stop at a Bai-village courtyard for a tea break
• 10:30 — Continue to the main lake viewpoint — the iconic S-bend where the road curves between the lake and the mountains
• 11:30 — Roll into a small fishing village; lunch at a family kitchen on the lake (clay-pot fish, sour-spicy vegetables, Bai rice noodles)
• 13:00 — Cycle back along the same path; with a tailwind it's faster
• 14:30 — Return bikes at the rental shop; drop-off in Dali Old Town

Who this is for: Travelers age 8+ who can ride a bike. No prior fitness needed — the route is flat, paved, and you can swap to an e-bike at any point. Excellent half-day add-on to a Dali itinerary. Families welcome (kid-size bikes and child seats available with advance notice).

Logistics: Bike rental and helmet included. Average pace 12 km/h with photo stops. The lake is at 1,970 m — mild altitude, but bring sun cream; the sun off the water is strong year-round. Bring a windproof layer if cycling outside summer.
