Sanya Travel Guide: China's Tropical Paradise on Hainan Island

Your complete Sanya travel guide — palm-fringed beaches, luxury resorts, and rainforest adventures in China's Hawaii. Updated for 2026.

Why Sanya Is China's Best Beach Destination

Sanya sits at the southern tip of Hainan Island, China's only tropical province. With year-round warm weather, crystal-clear waters, and world-class resorts, it's often called the "Hawaii of China." This Sanya itinerary covers the best beaches, cultural sites, and tropical experiences — whether you're looking for relaxation, adventure, or a mix of both.

Best Beaches in Sanya

  • Yalong Bay (亚龙湾) — Sanya's premier beach. 7 km of white sand, calm turquoise water, lined with 5-star resorts (Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, Park Hyatt). Best water clarity in Sanya.
  • Haitang Bay (海棠湾) — The newest resort area, home to Atlantis Sanya and China's largest duty-free shopping mall. Great for families.
  • Dadonghai Bay — Central, accessible, and lively. More local atmosphere than the resort bays. Good budget option.
  • Wuzhizhou Island (蜈支洲岛) — A small island 30 minutes offshore with Maldives-quality water. Best snorkeling and diving near Sanya.

Day 1: Yalong Bay & Tropical Rainforest

Start with a morning at Yalong Bay — swim, sunbathe, or try parasailing and jet skiing. The water is warmest from May to October.

Afternoon: Visit Yanoda Rainforest(呀诺达), a tropical rainforest park with canopy walkways, zip lines, and waterfall pools. The 1.2 km glass bridge over the valley is not for the faint-hearted. Alternatively, explore Binglanggu (Betel Nut Valley) for Li and Miao ethnic minority culture.

Day 2: Wuzhizhou Island & Underwater World

Wuzhizhou Island is Sanya's crown jewel for water activities:

  • Scuba diving — Visibility up to 27 meters. Coral reefs, tropical fish, and sea turtles.
  • Snorkeling — Equipment rental available. The south side of the island has the best reefs.
  • Undersea walk — Walk on the ocean floor in a diving helmet. No swimming skills needed.
  • Glass-bottom boat — See the underwater world without getting wet.

Book the first ferry (8:00 AM) to maximize your time. The island gets crowded after 10 AM.

Day 3: Nanshan Temple & End of the Earth

Visit Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone, home to the 108-meter Guanyin Statue — taller than the Statue of Liberty and one of the tallest statues in the world. The peaceful temple complex includes vegetarian restaurants, Buddhist gardens, and the famous "Longevity Valley."

Afternoon: Stop at Tianya Haijiao(End of the Earth / 天涯海角), a rocky beach that's been a symbol of the farthest reaches of China for centuries. The boulders inscribed with Chinese characters are iconic photo spots.

Evening: Seafood dinner at Sanya First Market(第一市场) — buy fresh seafood from the market stalls and have a nearby restaurant cook it for you. Lobster, mantis shrimp, and grouper at a fraction of restaurant prices.

Duty-Free Shopping in Sanya

Hainan Duty-Free is one of China's biggest draws. Hainan Island offers a generous duty-free allowance (¥100,000/person/year) on international brands. The CDF Haitang Bay Duty-Free Mall is Asia's largest, with 350+ brands including Chanel, Dior, Gucci, and Apple — all at significant discounts.

Best Time to Visit Sanya

  • November–March: Peak season. Warm (22–28°C) while the rest of China is freezing. Book early.
  • April–June: Shoulder season. Hot but fewer crowds and lower prices.
  • July–October: Summer and typhoon season. Hot and humid. Some typhoon disruptions possible, but prices are lowest.

Getting to Sanya

  • By air: Sanya Phoenix Airport (SYX) has direct flights from all major Chinese cities and some international routes (Seoul, Singapore, Bangkok).
  • Visa-free: Hainan offers 30-day visa-free entry for 59 nationalities — one of China's most generous visa policies.
  • From Hong Kong: 1.5-hour direct flight.
