Overview
Two-day Tibet trip from Lhasa across 5,190m Lakenla Pass to sacred Namtso (4,718m): turquoise water, prayer-flag headlands, overnight at the lake, sunrise return.
About This Tour
Sleep one night beside the highest sacred lake in Tibet. Namtso ("Heavenly Lake," 4,718m) is one of the three holy lakes of Tibetan Buddhism — a 70-kilometer-long sheet of turquoise water ringed by the Nyenchen Tanglha range. Most tours rush it as a day trip and people arrive exhausted from the altitude. We do it as an overnight so you actually get the sunset, the night sky, and the early-morning light when the lake is at its bluest.
From Lhasa (3,650m) you drive north via the Damxung grasslands, cross the 5,190m Lakenla Pass (yes, higher than the lake itself), and descend to Tashi Dor peninsula, the classic viewpoint with prayer-flag-draped headlands. All foreign visitors in Tibet must hold a valid Tibet Travel Permit, which we prepare in Lhasa before your trip — your passport and China visa scans are needed at least 20 days ahead.
Itinerary outline:
- Day 1 — 07:30 hotel pickup in Lhasa; drive north via the Damxung grasslands (~4 hrs)
- Day 1 — 12:00 stop at a roadside teahouse near the pass for noodles
- Day 1 — 13:30 cross Lakenla Pass (5,190m); photo stop at the prayer flags
- Day 1 — 14:30 arrive Namtso; check into your basic lakeside guesthouse
- Day 1 — 15:30 walk around the Tashi Dor headland; the main viewpoint over the lake
- Day 1 — 19:00 simple Tibetan-style dinner at the guesthouse; star photography after dark
- Day 2 — 06:30 sunrise on the lake (the best light of the trip)
- Day 2 — 09:00 breakfast and check-out
- Day 2 — 09:30 drive back to Lhasa with stops as needed
- Day 2 — 15:00 approximate drop-off at your Lhasa hotel
Who this is for: Travelers already acclimatized in Lhasa (do this trip on day 3 of your Lhasa stay at the earliest, not day 1). Minimum age 8. Decent fitness for slow walking at 4,700m. The lakeside guesthouse is genuinely basic — shared bathrooms, electric blanket, no heating, no shower. If you need creature comforts, this is not the trip.
Logistics: Tibet Travel Permit included. Private vehicle with Tibetan driver and English-speaking guide. One night in a basic lakeside guesthouse (twin or triple share). Park entrance fee included. Pack warm gear, sunscreen, sunglasses and a headlamp. Vehicle-based oxygen available on request.
Local Roads. Global Eyes. Namtso closes for snow in winter (typically mid-November to early April); we'll flag if your dates are at risk. WhatsApp +86 139 1764 3020 or [email protected].
