Overview
8-day Tibet overland to the north Everest Base Camp (5,200m): Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse, Tingri, sunrise on the world's highest peak, return via Friendship Highway.
About This Tour
Stand on the Tibetan side of Everest, where the north face fills the sky and the road runs out. The north Everest Base Camp at Rongbuk (5,200m) is the highest road-accessible viewpoint of Mount Everest (Chomolungma, 8,848m) in the world. This 8-day overland tour drives the Friendship Highway from Lhasa across the plateau to Tingri and EBC, with proper acclimatization built into the first three days so you actually feel good when you arrive.
Every foreign traveler in Tibet needs a Tibet Travel Permit, and to reach EBC you also need an Alien Travel Permit and a military permit for the Shigatse prefecture — we arrange all three through our Lhasa-licensed Tibetan operator. You cannot book this trip without a passport scan and Chinese visa scan at least 20 days before departure.
Itinerary outline:
- Day 1 — Arrive Lhasa (3,650m); transfer to your hotel; rest, no exertion, drink water
- Day 2 — Lhasa acclimatization; gentle walking tour of the old town and main palace square
- Day 3 — Lhasa cultural day at the major monastery complex; debating courtyard if timing allows
- Day 4 — Drive Lhasa to Shigatse (3,840m) via Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier viewpoint, and Gyantse
- Day 5 — Shigatse to Rongbuk (5,000m) via Tingri; afternoon arrival at your guesthouse near the main viewpoint; sunset on the north face
- Day 6 — Sunrise at the EBC viewpoint; drive down to Shigatse
- Day 7 — Shigatse back to Lhasa via the southern Friendship Highway route
- Day 8 — Departure transfer to Lhasa Gonggar Airport
Who this is for: Travelers who want to see Everest from the dramatic north side without committing to a multi-week trek. Minimum age 12. You should be in normal good health and able to walk slowly at 5,000m. Not recommended for anyone with cardiac issues, uncontrolled hypertension, or recent respiratory infection.
Logistics: All three permits (Tibet Travel Permit, Alien Travel Permit, Shigatse military permit) included and prepared in Lhasa before you head west. Private vehicle with Tibetan driver and English-speaking guide. Accommodation: 3-star hotels in Lhasa and Shigatse, basic guesthouse at Rongbuk (shared bathroom, electric blanket, very cold at night — pack warm). Vehicle-based oxygen for the high sections. Maximum 6 passengers per vehicle so everyone gets a window.
Local Roads. Global Eyes. Tibet logistics are unforgiving and last-minute changes happen — political closures, snowstorms, permit windows. We work with a Lhasa-based Tibetan operator who handles it daily. WhatsApp +86 139 1764 3020 or [email protected].
