★★★★★ 4.6 (17)⏱ 3 days and 1 hour · Private🗣 English guide

Overview

A relaxed 3-day private journey pairing UNESCO World Heritage Mount Fanjing with the riverside lantern magic of Fenghuang Ancient Town.

About This Tour

This private 3-day tour links two of Guizhou and western Hunan's most iconic sights into one unhurried trip designed for international travelers. Day one eases you in at Yunshe Village, a National Geographic-recommended Tujia hamlet wrapped in drifting mountain mist at the foot of Mount Fanjing. The heart of the trip is Fanjingshan (Mount Fanjing), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Guizhou's premier sacred mountain, where cable cars carry you up to surreal landmarks like the Mushroom Stone, the Red Cloud Golden Summit, and cliff-top temples seemingly floating above a sea of clouds. The journey closes in Fenghuang Ancient Town, one of China's most photogenic riverside towns, where Miao stilt houses lean over the Tuojiang River, wooden boats drift past Rainbow Bridge, and the whole town glows after dark. Ideal for couples, families, and culture-and-scenery lovers who want world-class landscapes without strenuous hiking. Best from April to October. With short daily drives, comfortable 4-star hotels, and an English-speaking guide arranging everything privately, this is an easy, deeply rewarding introduction to inland China. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: April to October; misty cloud-sea views are common after rain • Fitness level: easy; cable cars cover the mountain ascent, only short walks involved • Mount Fanjing tickets are strictly capacity-controlled and sell out on holidays; advance booking is essential • Summit boardwalks involve some stairs and can be crowded on peak days • High-speed rail transfers from Guangzhou/Shenzhen are included on selected packages

Itinerary

Day 1: Tongren | Arrival & Yunshe Tujia Village

Meet your guide at Tongren Railway Station by mid-afternoon (high-speed rail from Guangzhou or Shenzhen is included on those packages, arriving around 14:50). Drive roughly one hour to Yunshe Village, a tranquil hamlet at the foot of Mount Fanjing that National Geographic has singled out for its dreamlike scenery of rising mist, layered ridges, and smoking chimneys. Known as 'the First Tujia Village in China', it preserves the distinctive traditions and folk customs of the Tujia ethnic group. After a gentle stroll through the village lanes, transfer to your 4-star hotel near the mountain base to check in. The evening is free to relax or explore the surroundings at your own pace. Meals: none included. Overnight: Fanjingshan foothills hotel.

Day 2: Mount Fanjing Hike | Transfer to Fenghuang

After breakfast, set off to explore Fanjingshan, Guizhou's most revered sacred mountain and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cable cars carry you up and down so you can focus your energy on the highlights: the gravity-defying Mushroom Stone, the iconic Red Cloud Golden Summit, Chengen Temple, and the Heavenly King Hall, often wreathed in cloud. Expect roughly 4 km of light walking with around 400 m of cumulative ascent along boardwalks and stairs over about three hours. In the afternoon, drive about 1.5 hours to Fenghuang Ancient Town and check into a stilt-house guesthouse on the Tuojiang River. Wander Rainbow Bridge, Wanming Pagoda, and Shen Congwen's former residence. Evenings are the town's soul: try a wooden boat ride, watch the riverside light show, and sample Miao specialties. Meals: breakfast. Overnight: Fenghuang Ancient Town.

Day 3: Fenghuang Ancient Town | Departure

Enjoy a slow morning with no early start. After breakfast, explore Fenghuang at leisure: photograph the Tuojiang River wrapped in dawn mist from the North Gate Tower, take in the panorama from the Rainbow Bridge pavilion, and stroll the old lanes past historic residences, the Yang Family Ancestral Hall, and the ancient city wall. Pick up local handicrafts and souvenirs at Hongqiao Market before a relaxed independent lunch. In the early afternoon your guide transfers you to Fenghuang Ancient Town Station for departure (about one hour before your train; included high-speed rail back to Guangzhou/Shenzhen departs around 13:48). Meals: breakfast. Overnight: none.
