Hainan Island Coastal Loop Self-Drive (China Route 1)

★★★★★ 4.7 (179)⏱ 6 days and 1 hour · Private🗣 English guide

Overview

A six-day chauffeured self-drive around tropical Hainan on China Route 1, looping 988 km of palm-fringed coast, beaches and old fishing towns.

About This Tour

Hainan is China's tropical island province, a place of coconut palms, coral bays and warm turquoise water often called the country's Hawaii. The newly completed Hainan Island Loop Highway, branded China Route 1, rings the entire coast for 988 km of beautifully paved, ocean-hugging driving, frequently compared to California's Highway 1. This six-day loop links the cosmopolitan beaches of Sanya in the south, the surf town of Riyue Bay, the volcanic and seafood-rich north around Haikou, and quiet fishing harbours, mangroves and rainforest edges in between. Because foreign visitors cannot legally self-drive in China, this is a chauffeured/guided self-drive: you relax in a private SUV with a professional English-speaking driver-guide who handles the route while you swim, snorkel, eat seafood and soak up the sun. This is one of our easiest, most accessible routes, with flat, world-class roads, sea-level elevation and no border permits, ideal for families with young children, couples and travellers who want a gentle, beach-led introduction to China. It is a year-round destination, warmest and driest from October to April. Private tour, priced per person. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and border-area regulations. Good to know: • This is a chauffeured/guided self-drive: foreign visitors cannot self-drive in China, so a licensed English-speaking driver-guide does the driving • Best season: October to April for warm, dry, sunny weather; May to September is hotter and wetter with occasional typhoons • No border permits required; this is one of our most foreigner- and family-friendly routes • Fitness level: very easy; beach- and drive-based with optional swimming and snorkelling • Altitude: sea level throughout, no altitude concerns • Roads are flat, modern and excellent; expect short, relaxed driving days of 2-4 hours • Bring swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen and a hat; private tour, priced per person

Itinerary

Day 1: Sanya|Arrival in the Tropical South

Your driver-guide meets you at Sanya Phoenix airport (around 15 km, 25 min) and transfers you to a beachfront hotel on Sanya or Yalong Bay at sea level. Sanya is Hainan's resort heart, ringed by some of China's finest white-sand beaches and clear blue water. After check-in the day is yours to unwind by the sea, take a first swim and shake off the flight. As the heat eases, your guide leads a stroll through Sanya Bay and the lively Dadonghai area for tropical fruit and a fresh-seafood dinner, where you pick your catch from the tank. A relaxed briefing covers the six-day clockwise loop. Overnight in a Sanya beachfront hotel. Meals: Dinner included.

Day 2: Sanya|Beaches, Bays & Rainforest Edge

A full local day with light driving (sites within 40 km). We explore Sanya's signature spots: the Buddhist coastal park of Nanshan with its towering seaside Guanyin statue, the headland scenery of Tianya Haijiao ('Edge of the Sky, Rim of the Sea'), and the pristine arc of Yalong Bay. Optionally we drive up to the Yanoda or Yalong Bay rainforest park for canopy walks and waterfalls where jungle meets coast. The afternoon leaves time for snorkelling, paddleboarding or simply lazing on the sand. Evening is free to enjoy Sanya's resort dining. Overnight in your Sanya beachfront hotel. Meals: Breakfast included.

Day 3: Sanya to Wanning|Surf Coast & Coconut Country

We begin the clockwise loop up the east coast, an easy 130 km, roughly 2.5 hour drive on the palm-lined China Route 1. We stop at Riyue Bay (Sun and Moon Bay), Hainan's surfing capital, where you can take a beginner lesson or watch the breaks, and continue past long empty beaches and coconut plantations. A short hop offshore lies Wuzhizhou Island for optional snorkelling over coral. In Wanning we can visit a coffee or coconut farm and sample local Xinglong tropical fare. The coastal driving here is the heart of the 'China Route 1' experience, sea on one side, green hills on the other. Overnight in a comfortable Wanning/Shimei Bay hotel. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch included.
4

Day 4: Wanning to Wenchang|Mangroves & Fishing Harbours

Continuing north, an easy 180 km, roughly 3 hour coastal drive takes us through Qionghai and on to Wenchang, Hainan's 'hometown of coconuts' and overseas Chinese. We pause at Boao, site of the famous Asia forum and a fine river-meets-sea sandbar, and detour into a coastal mangrove wetland for birdlife and boardwalks. Wenchang is renowned for its eponymous chicken and for Dongjiao Yelin, a dreamy coconut grove fringing the beach. We may also glimpse the Wenchang Space Launch Centre's coast. The pace stays gentle, with plenty of stops for fresh coconut water. Overnight in a comfortable Wenchang coastal hotel. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch included.
5

Day 5: Wenchang to Haikou|Volcanoes & Old Arcades

A short 70 km, roughly 1.5 hour drive brings us to Haikou, the island capital on the north coast. We visit the Haikou Volcanic Cluster Geopark, a green park of extinct cones, lava tubes and crater rims just outside the city, then explore the atmospheric Qilou Old Street, blocks of early-20th-century arcaded shophouses blending Chinese and Southeast Asian style, alive with snack stalls. The afternoon allows a stroll along Haikou Bay and the Century Bridge, or the Hainan Provincial Museum for island history. Haikou's old-town coffee culture and seafood markets make for a memorable last evening. Overnight in a comfortable Haikou hotel. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch included.
6

Day 6: Haikou|Departure

After a relaxed breakfast, depending on your flight you may take a final morning stroll along Haikou's Holiday Beach or revisit the Qilou arcades for souvenirs and tropical fruit. If you flew into Sanya and out of Haikou, the loop is complete; otherwise we can continue the short remaining coast back toward Sanya. Your driver-guide then transfers you to Haikou Meilan airport (around 25 km, 35 min) and assists with check-in. This concludes your six-day Hainan Island coastal loop on China Route 1. For longer stays we can add resort days or a diving extension. Meals: Breakfast included.
