Hidden Southern Zhejiang 3-Day Tour: Xiandu, Painted Canvas Village & Yunhe Terraces Sunrise

★★★★★ 4.8 (193)⏱ 3 days and 1 hour · Private🗣 English guide

Overview

A relaxed private 3-day journey through southern Zhejiang's misty river towns, cliff-clinging ancient villages and the cloud-wreathed Yunhe rice terraces at sunrise.

About This Tour

Southern Zhejiang is one of eastern China's most photogenic and least-touristed corners, a land of jade-green rivers, dramatic red-rock peaks, centuries-old villages and rice terraces that ripple down the mountainsides. This private 3-day tour links the highlights of Lishui: the fairytale scenery of Xiandu Scenic Area with its towering Dinghu Peak, the artists' riverside hamlet of Guyan Huaxiang on the Ou River, the cliff-side ancient villages of Songyang, and the famous Yunhe rice terraces, whose 'Nine Bends' have graced the cover of Chinese National Geographic. You'll rise before dawn for a sea-of-clouds sunrise over the terraces, wander old stone villages where time stands still, and savor local snacks like Jinyun sesame cakes. With an English-speaking guide, a private vehicle and handpicked riverside and mountain stays, it's perfect for travelers who love photography, slow travel and authentic rural China. Best in spring and autumn. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: March-May and September-November; firefly season approx. March 15-April 20 (seasonal bonus, weather permitting) • Fitness level: easy; mostly light walking with optional cable car at Xiandu • Early pre-dawn start on Day 3 for the terrace sunrise • Sea of clouds and sunrise depend entirely on weather • Roads are mountainous and winding; allow time between villages

Itinerary

Day 1: Jinyun Xiandu & Riverside Painted Canvas Village

Your guide meets you at Jinyun West Station around 11:00-12:00 and you sample local specialties, Jinyun sesame cakes, pounded-meat soup and hand-pulled noodles. The afternoon is spent in the otherworldly Xiandu Scenic Area: visit towering Dinghu Peak and the grand Yellow Emperor Temple with its live ceremonial performance, ascend Buxu Mountain on foot or by cable car for sweeping views, photograph the classic 'old farmer leading an ox' scene at Zhutan Mountain, the viral Rock Cavern Bookhouse built into a former quarry, and the dramatic red cliffs of Xiao Chibi. In the evening transfer to the riverside artists' village of Guyan Huaxiang to settle in, then enjoy the lanes, river breeze and small eateries at leisure. In firefly season a magical evening firefly walk may be added. Meals: L (Jinyun snacks). Overnight: Guyan Huaxiang area guesthouse.

Day 2: Ou River Morning, Guyan Huaxiang & Songyang Ancient Villages

Begin early on the banks of the Ou River for the chance of a misty dawn and the romantic fishing-net and sailboat display. After breakfast, explore Guyan Huaxiang, the scenic stretch of the Ou River that draws art students from across China: stroll the painting village of Dagangtou, then ferry across to Yantou with its grove of ancient camphor trees and the ingenious Tongji weir and stacked water bridge. In the afternoon head into the 'hidden Jiangnan' of Songyang, whose remote, mountain-clinging villages preserve their traditional character: visit Yangjiatang, where red roofs and yellow walls look like a cluster of medieval castles; Chenjiapu, home to a cliff-top branch of the famous Librairie Avant-Garde, named by CNN among the world's most beautiful bookstores; and a viewpoint over cloud-wrapped Xikeng village. Tonight you stay near the Yunhe rice terraces. Meals: free/AA. Overnight: Yunhe Terraces area stay.

Day 3: Yunhe Rice Terraces Sunrise & Departure

Wake before dawn for the trip's grand finale at the Yunhe rice terraces. From the sunrise viewpoint watch the sea of clouds churn over the slopes, then take in the 'Nine Bends' where terraces ripple from valley floor to ridgeline like the textures of the earth itself. Visit Kengen Stone Village, a Chinese National Geographic cover scene of stone farmhouses, spring wells and covered bridges that feels wonderfully primitive and unspoiled. For those who prefer to sleep in, a relaxed later visit covers the same highlights. Drop down for breakfast and, if you wish, a nap at the guesthouse. Around 15:00 transfer to Lishui high-speed rail station for departure (book trains for 16:00 or later). Meals: free/AA. Overnight: not included.
