Hong Kong MacLehose Trail Sections 2-1 & Po Pin Chau: 2-Day Coastal Hiking & Beach Camping

★★★★★ 4.6 (169)⏱ 2 days and 1 hour · Private🗣 English guide

Overview

A two-day private hiking and camping adventure on Hong Kong's world-famous MacLehose Trail, from the golden sands of Sai Wan and Ham Tin to the hexagonal sea cliffs of Po Pin Chau.

About This Tour

This private two-day trip explores the wild eastern coast of Hong Kong along the MacLehose Trail, repeatedly ranked among the world's greatest hiking trails by National Geographic. Far from the neon skyline most visitors know, the Sai Kung peninsula reveals a different Hong Kong of turquoise bays, empty white-sand beaches and dramatic volcanic rock. You hike Sections 2 and 1 of the trail past Long Ke Wan, Sai Wan and Ham Tin, then camp overnight on the beach under the stars beside the South China Sea. The route also reaches Po Pin Chau, a sea-carved island wall of towering hexagonal rock columns within the UNESCO-recognised Hong Kong Global Geopark. Travelling with an English-speaking guide and a small private group, you carry light camping gear and set an easy pace built around swimming, sunset and sunrise on the sand. Ideal for active travellers and nature lovers who want to see the surprising wild side of Hong Kong. Best from autumn to spring; summer is hot and humid. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: October to April; avoid hot, humid summer • Fitness level: moderate; full-day coastal hiking with some ascents and soft sand • Overnight is beach camping with basic facilities; bring a headlamp and personal toiletries • Carry enough water and snacks; shops on the trail are limited • Tour may be cancelled or rerouted in case of typhoon, rainstorm or high-temperature warnings

Itinerary

1

Day 1: Sai Kung | MacLehose Section 2 to Ham Tin Beach Camp

Meet your English-speaking guide in Sai Kung and transfer to the trailhead at the High Island Reservoir East Dam, where giant S-shaped rock columns mark the start of MacLehose Trail Section 2. Hiking roughly 8-10 km, you trace the coastline above Long Ke Wan before descending to the celebrated beaches of Sai Wan and Ham Tin, two of the finest stretches of sand in Hong Kong. Along the way you enjoy sweeping views of jade bays and offshore islands. In the afternoon you reach the beach campsite, pitch tents on the sand and have free time to swim in the warm sea, walk the shoreline or simply relax. As the sun sets you share a casual beachside dinner and watch the stars come out over the South China Sea. Meals: self-arranged/AA. Overnight: beach camping at Ham Tin.

Day 2: Po Pin Chau Sea Cliffs | MacLehose Section 1 | Departure

Wake to sunrise over the bay and a relaxed breakfast on the beach before packing up camp. Today you hike toward Po Pin Chau, an island sliced from the headland by the sea, whose sheer walls of hexagonal volcanic rock columns are a star feature of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark; you take in the viewpoints and photograph this extraordinary geology. Continuing onto MacLehose Section 1, you follow the trail back along the reservoir, with the towering man-made dam wall and the rugged coast as a finale. After roughly 8 km of walking you return to the trailhead in early afternoon and transfer back to Sai Kung town, where the tour ends. Meals: self-arranged/AA. Transfer back included.
