Overview

A relaxed 4-day private tour through Guangxi's borderland karst, from the transnational Detian Waterfall and emerald Ebi Spring to the storybook rice-paddy villages of Mingshi.

About This Tour

This easygoing 4-day private tour explores the dreamlike karst country of southwest Guangxi along the China-Vietnam border, run for your group only with an English-speaking guide and private vehicle. From Nanning you drive west into a landscape of limestone peaks, sugarcane fields and turquoise rivers to reach two natural showpieces: the Tongling Grand Canyon with its 188-metre waterfall, ferns and limestone caverns, and Ebi Spring, one of southwest China's three great springs, its water shading from clear to jade to deep blue. The highlight is Detian Falls, the largest transnational waterfall in Asia, where the river plunges 70 metres in thundering tiers shared between China and Vietnam, a setting made famous by Chinese film and TV. You also cruise the karst gorges of Dongnayu Bay and cycle the idyllic Mingshi pastoral valley, a scene of rice paddies, water buffalo and mist-wrapped peaks often called a real-world Shangri-La. With gentle walking and short cycling, this trip suits families, couples and photographers who want spectacular scenery without strenuous hiking. Best in the wetter months of May-October for full waterfalls and lush green paddies. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: May-Oct for the fullest waterfalls and greenest paddies; spring and autumn are mild and clear • Fitness level: easy; mostly sightseeing with short walks and optional gentle cycling • Tongling Grand Canyon involves about 818 steps down into the gorge, so reasonable knees are needed • Tour ends at Nanning; book onward flights after 17:30 from Nanning Wuxu Airport or trains after 17:30 from Nanning East • Bring sun protection, light rain gear and comfortable walking shoes • Carry your passport for hotel check-in (the route runs close to the Vietnam border)

Itinerary

1

Day 1: Arrival in Nanning

Make your own way to the designated hotel in central Nanning, the green capital of Guangxi, and check in under your name. The rest of the day is free: early arrivers can explore the city's parks and night markets, sample Guangxi rice-noodle specialities and settle in before the tour begins. Your guide confirms the next morning's start time and answers any questions. This relaxed first day lets you arrive at your own pace ahead of the drive into the karst borderlands. Meals: not included. Overnight: standard twin room at a central Nanning hotel.

Day 2: Nanning to Jingxi | Tongling Canyon & Ebi Spring

After breakfast you drive west (about 3 hours) along the scenic Hena Expressway, with karst peaks, fields and sugarcane unrolling on either side. At the Tongling Grand Canyon you descend around 818 steps and walk through caverns to the canyon floor, where streams run past the 188-metre Tongling Waterfall, primeval tree-fern forest and stalactite caves. In the afternoon you continue to Ebi Spring, a 50-square-kilometre spring famed as one of southwest China's three great springs and the source above Detian Falls, its water deepening from clear to jade with depths to 30 metres. Photo stops include the seven-arch bridge and hillside viewpoint. Drive about 4.5 hours total. Meals: breakfast included; lunch and dinner self-arranged. Overnight: hotel in Jingxi.

Day 3: Detian Transnational Falls & Dongnayu Bay

After checking out you drive about 2.5 hours to Detian Falls, the largest transnational waterfall in Asia, where the river plunges 70 metres in three thundering tiers straddling the China-Vietnam frontier, a filming location for the fantasy drama 'Journey of Flower.' Multiple terraces give changing views, and you can find the hidden boundary marker No. 836 or take an optional bamboo raft close to the spray. In the afternoon a short drive reaches Dongnayu Bay on the Heishui (Black Water) River, a karst wonderland of jutting peaks and emerald water. You board a small boat to an island, then walk a roughly 3km boardwalk through flower meadows back to the gate. Evening brings you to the pastoral Mingshi area. Meals: breakfast included; lunch and dinner self-arranged. Overnight: ethnic-style lodge at Mingshi (twin room).

Day 4: Mingshi Pastoral Cycling & Return to Nanning

This morning your guide leads a gentle cycle along the Mingshi greenway, rolling beside the Mingshi River through rice paddies and sugarcane with barely a crowd in sight, one of Guangxi's most idyllic countryside scenes. Those who prefer can walk a roughly 5km path or simply linger over a slow breakfast surrounded by peaks and water. After checking out around midday you begin the roughly 3-hour drive back to Nanning, with drop-offs at Nanning Wuxu Airport (about 15:30-16:00) and Nanning East railway station (about 16:30-17:00). The pastoral calm of Mingshi is a fitting close to a tour through Guangxi's karst borderlands. Meals: breakfast included; lunch self-arranged. Overnight: not included (tour ends in Nanning).
