Overview
A guided two-day beginner mountaineering trip to summit the 4,800 m snow peak of Aotaina in Sichuan's Three Aogu range, with professional high-altitude guides.
About This Tour
Aotaina is one of the three peaks of the Sanao (Three Aogu) snow-mountain range in Heishui County, western Sichuan, and a popular first 'snow peak' for aspiring mountaineers. This 2-day private guided climb is built for travelers who dream of standing on a genuine glaciated summit but have no technical experience: professional high-altitude guides accompany you throughout, basic mountaineering gear is provided, and the summit push is timed for the early-morning hours. Day one is a transfer and acclimatization day at the Sanao base camp, with a pre-climb briefing. Day two starts in the dark for the roughly 5.5 km one-way ascent to the 4,800 m summit, where successful climbers receive a commemorative medal before descending. This is a serious high-altitude effort requiring good fitness and acclimatization, not a casual hike, but it is achievable for determined first-timers in good health. Best from spring to autumn. Includes English-speaking coordination, private transfers, base-camp lodging, and professional summit guides. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Altitude: summit at 4,800 m; turnaround time is strictly 11:00 for safety and descent is mandatory if not reached • Fitness level: challenging high-altitude climb of about 5.5 km each way taking 6-8 hours round trip; good fitness required • Day 2 starts around 03:00; bring a headlamp with spare batteries and warm layers • Acclimatization and good health are essential; not suitable for those with heart or respiratory conditions • Bring layered alpine clothing, waterproof boots, gloves, sunglasses, and altitude medication
Itinerary
1
Day 1: Chongqing | Transfer to Sanao Base Camp
Meet at Jiazhou Road Metro Station (Exit 3B) in Chongqing between 06:20 and 06:30 and depart with an on-board introduction to break the ice. The day is a scenic long-distance transfer toward Heishui County in western Sichuan, gaining altitude as you go to begin acclimatizing. Arrive at your accommodation around 15:30 and check in, then gather for a group dinner at the restaurant. After dinner, the guides hold a pre-climb briefing at the base covering route, pacing, gear, and safety, before an early night to rest ahead of the alpine start. This is a key acclimatization day, so drink plenty of water, move gently, and avoid overexertion. Meals: dinner. Overnight: Heishui County homestay (twin room).

Day 2: Summit Aotaina (4,800 m) | Return to Chongqing
Rise at 03:00 to wash, pack, and check out, leaving luggage in storage. Take an early breakfast at 03:10, then drive about 30 minutes to the Sanao visitor center (15 km), transfer to a shuttle for the hour-long ride to the climbing base (21 km), and meet your assigned high-altitude guides. Set off around 04:10 for the roughly 5.5 km one-way ascent, taking 6-8 hours round trip. On a successful summit you receive a commemorative medal and time for photos before descending in an orderly group back to the climbing base. Note the strict 11:00 turnaround: for safety, all climbers must descend at that time whether or not the summit is reached. Collect your luggage, transfer back via the visitor center, and drive back to Chongqing; the return drive is long, so bring a neck pillow. Meals: breakfast. Overnight: none.
