Overview
A serene private journey to Mount Putuo, China's holy island of the Bodhisattva Guanyin, with ancient temples, sea-view shrines and the towering South Sea Guanyin statue.
About This Tour
Mount Putuo, a green island in the Zhoushan Archipelago off Zhejiang, is one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China and the legendary home of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. This private 2-day pilgrimage carries you across the sea to a place where temple bells drift over pine-clad hills, monks chant in centuries-old halls, and pilgrims circle the giant 'Heart' character carved into a cliff. With an English-speaking guide to explain the rituals, symbolism and history, you'll visit the great monasteries of Fayu and Puji, marvel at the rare nine-dragon ceiling, walk the Purple Bamboo Grove past the 'Temple of the Unwilling-to-Leave Guanyin,' and stand beneath the 33-meter bronze South Sea Guanyin statue gazing out to the open ocean. Nights are spent in a simple island guesthouse, and there's time for sea-view contemplation, vegetarian temple cuisine and quiet beaches. Best for travelers drawn to Chinese spiritual culture, gentle scenery and a peaceful, crowd-free island experience near Hangzhou and Shanghai. Modest dress is appreciated at the temples. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: spring and autumn for mild weather; the island is busiest on Buddhist festival days • Fitness level: easy; gentle temple and island walking with some steps • Dress modestly and behave respectfully inside temples • Ferry-dependent: crossings can shift with sea and weather conditions • Vegetarian temple cuisine is a highlight; carry small cash for minor scenic fees
