About This Tour
Zhangbi Ancient Castle (45km from Pingyao) is a Sui-Tang dynasty military fortress with the longest preserved underground defensive tunnel network in China — 10km of corridors over 3 levels, dug for ambushes and supply storage. Above-ground: walled village with the Tang-era Empty Wang Temple, Ming-dynasty Liuyi Temple, and the original twelve zodiac shrines. Underground: bring a flashlight (provided) for the 800m tunnel walk visitors can access — claustrophobics should skip. Morning at Pingyao city, afternoon driving to Zhangbi for guided castle tour. Private vehicle, guide, entrance tickets included.
