Bamboo forest above, red-rock waterfall below. Chishui — "Red Water" — sits in Guizhou's far northwest corner, where the province meets Sichuan along the Chishui River. The whole region is built on danxia, the orange-red sandstone that erodes into cliffs, canyons and step waterfalls. Pour a green bamboo sea over the top of that geology and you get the Chishui scenic landscape: thousands of square kilometres of moso bamboo forest growing on top of red-rock cliffs, with rivers cutting through and falling off the edges. It's not on most foreign visitors' Guizhou itineraries, which is exactly why it's worth a day.

This private day tour pairs the two iconic Chishui scenic areas: the Sidonggou bamboo sea, a walking valley of giant moso bamboo, mossy boardwalks and stepped cascades; and Shizhangdong Waterfall (also written Shizhang Dong) — at roughly 76 metres tall and 80 metres wide, it's one of the largest cataracts in southern China and the second-biggest in Guizhou after Huangguoshu, falling over a wall of red danxia rock.

Day 1 itinerary:

• 08:00 — Pickup from your Chishui hotel
• 09:00 — Arrive Sidonggou Bamboo Sea; walking loop through the moso-bamboo valley, past stepped cascades and a small ancient temple
• 12:00 — Local Chishui lunch in a village restaurant: bamboo-shoot dishes, river fish, smoky tofu
• 13:30 — Drive to Shizhangdong Waterfall scenic area
• 14:30 — Walk the descending stone paths to the base of the waterfall; viewpoint over the red-rock plunge pool
• 16:00 — Optional stop at a danxia red-cliff overlook on the return road
• 17:30 — Drop-off at your Chishui hotel or bus/train station

Who this is for: Off-the-beaten-track travelers, photographers who want red rock and green bamboo in the same frame, anyone routing between Sichuan (Chongqing) and central Guizhou who wants something more interesting than a straight transfer. Easy walking on stone steps and boardwalks; suitable for ages 6 and up.
