Overview
UNESCO-listed Hakka-Cantonese watchtowers built by overseas Chinese 1900s. Private day tour from Guangzhou: Zili Village, Majianglong, Liyuan Garden, Cantonese lunch.
About This Tour
Step inside the strangest skyline in southern China. The Kaiping Diaolou are 1,800+ fortified watchtowers built between the late 1800s and 1930s by overseas Chinese who sent money home from California, Vancouver, and Sydney to protect their villages from bandits and floods. Greek columns next to Cantonese roof tiles, Renaissance domes on top of bamboo-scaffolded brickwork, Italian balconies overlooking rice paddies. Nothing else in China looks like this. UNESCO listed the cluster in 2007.
This private day tour takes you out of Guangzhou (about 2 hours by expressway), into Kaiping's countryside, and through three of the most photogenic clusters: Zili Village (15 towers in a postcard paddy-field setting), Majianglong Village (jungle-overgrown towers reached by walking through a bamboo grove), and Liyuan Garden (the private estate of a Hong Kong-American merchant, complete with Chinese pavilions and a Roman fountain). A licensed English-speaking guide unpacks the Qiaoxiang diaspora story — how a small county in Guangdong sent 600,000+ people overseas and how the money flowed back.
