Overview
Shaxi is the last intact Tea-Horse Road post-station in China — the quiet alternative to Lijiang. 2-day tour from Dali with English guide and old-town guesthouse stay.
About This Tour
While Lijiang turned into a postcard, Shaxi quietly stayed real. This little Bai-minority town in a hidden valley north of Dali was once the main caravan stop on the southern Tea-Horse Road — the trail that carried Yunnan pu'er tea, on muleback, up into Tibet in exchange for war-horses. Most other stops along the route are gone. Shaxi's market square, theatre stage, gate towers and packhorse inns are still standing — and a 15-year restoration project (funded with help from the Swiss federal institute of technology) kept them honest. No paved-over fake-old streets. Real mud-brick walls, real Bai shopkeepers, real Friday morning market.
This 2-day private tour drives you from Dali up through the Cangshan mountains into the Shaxi valley (about 2 hours), settles you into a converted-courtyard guesthouse in the old town, and walks you through the streets with an English-speaking guide who can read the architecture for you. The next day you cycle out to the surrounding Bai villages, visit a still-active Buddhist grotto site nearby, and drive back to Dali.
