Overview

Striped red, orange, yellow and green sandstone hills on the Hexi Corridor. Private day tour from Zhangye: morning and golden-hour viewpoints, English guide.

About This Tour

Zhangye Danxia is the closest thing China has to a painted desert. Over 24 million years, layered sandstone and mineral deposits along the old Silk Road built up into long parallel ridges in shocking colors — terracotta red, mustard yellow, copper orange, jade green — that the Chinese tourism boards call the Rainbow Mountains. The colors are best in low-angle light: golden after sunrise, glowing again just before sunset. Midday flattens everything to pale brown.

This private day tour gives you the full Danxia experience — both the morning light and the famous golden hour. Your English-speaking guide picks you up in Zhangye, drives 30 km out to the Danxia National Geopark, and walks you through all four numbered viewpoints (each connected by the park shuttle, with a short uphill stroll at each platform). We schedule the longest viewpoint stop for late-afternoon golden hour. Lunch is at a local Gansu Hui-Muslim restaurant in a nearby village.

Day 1 itinerary:

  • 08:00 — Pickup from your Zhangye hotel
  • 09:00 — Arrive Zhangye Danxia National Geopark; enter and ride the first park shuttle
  • 09:30 — Viewpoint 1 walk for the morning side-lit ridges (~45 min)
  • 10:45 — Viewpoint 2 the colorful panorama platform (~45 min)
  • 12:30 — Hui-Muslim countryside lunch (hand-pulled noodles, lamb skewers, milk tea)
  • 14:30 — Viewpoint 3 the iconic ridge that appears on most Danxia postcards (~60 min)
  • 16:30 — Viewpoint 4 the golden-hour viewing terrace; stay through the best light (~75 min)
  • 18:30 — Depart park
  • 19:30 — Drop-off at your Zhangye hotel

Who this is for: Photographers (this is one of China's most photogenic landscapes), travelers on the Silk Road route between Lanzhou and Dunhuang, families with kids 5+, and anyone curious about the geology of the Hexi Corridor. Easy walking only — wooden boardwalks and short ramps at each viewpoint.

Logistics: Best April through October (winter snow can close some viewpoints). Zhangye has a small airport (Zhangye Ganzhou Airport, YZY) with limited flights from Xi'an, Lanzhou and Beijing; most travelers arrive by high-speed train on the Lanzhou–Urumqi line. Bring sun protection — there's almost no shade. Wind on the ridges is constant; a light jacket helps even in summer.

Local Roads. Global Eyes. We're a Beijing-licensed inbound operator with Silk Road specialists. Want to chain Zhangye with Mati Si rock temples, Jiayuguan fortress or onward to Dunhuang Mogao Caves? WhatsApp +86 139 1764 3020 or [email protected].
