The scenery changes with the season: in May and June the slopes glow with blooming alpine rhododendrons, while July and August bring a carpet of colorful wildflowers. Above 3,300 meters the landscape opens into broad alpine grassland under big skies, and on clear days you can gaze toward the Daxuetang massif and the graceful Yaomei Peak of the Four Sisters Mountains, rising to 6,250 meters.

This is high-altitude terrain, so the pace is kept easy and unhurried, with plenty of stops to breathe, photograph the flowers and enjoy the views; there is no race to any summit and comfort and safety come first. The meadows are home to protected plants such as blue poppies and snow lotus, which are admired but never picked, and all litter is carried back out to keep this fragile place pristine.
