3-Day Xi'an Itinerary: Terracotta Warriors, City Wall & Muslim Quarter Food

Your essential Xi'an travel guide — where the Silk Road began and ancient China lives on. Updated for 2026.

Why Xi'an Belongs on Your China Trip

Xi'an was China's capital for over 1,000 years and the eastern starting point of the Silk Road. Today it's home to the world-famous Terracotta Warriors, one of the best-preserved ancient city walls anywhere, and a thriving Muslim Quarter food scene that rivals any in Asia. Whether you're coming from Beijing to Xi'an by bullet train (4.5 hours) or flying in directly, three days is the sweet spot for this Xi'an itinerary.

Day 1: Terracotta Warriors Tour & Huaqing Hot Springs

Start with the highlight — the Terracotta Army(兵马俑). Located 40 km east of the city, this UNESCO World Heritage Site contains over 8,000 life-sized clay soldiers, each with unique facial features, guarding Emperor Qin Shi Huang's tomb for over 2,200 years.

The site has three excavation pits. Pit 1 is the largest and most impressive — rows upon rows of warriors in battle formation. Pit 3 is the command headquarters. Budget 2–3 hours minimum.

Afternoon: Stop at Huaqing Hot Springs(华清池) on the way back, a royal bathhouse dating to the Tang Dynasty. The love story of Emperor Xuanzong and his concubine Yang Guifei echoes through every pavilion here.

Pro tip: Hire a guide at the Terracotta Warriors — the difference between "cool statues" and "mind-blowing history" is a good storyteller. Book a private Terracotta Warriors tour to skip the group bus chaos.

Day 2: Ancient City Wall & Muslim Quarter Food Tour

Morning: Rent a bicycle and ride the full 13.7 km loop atop the Xi'an Ancient City Wall(西安城墙). Built in 1370 during the Ming Dynasty, it's one of the few completely intact city walls in China. The views at sunrise are spectacular — ancient meets modern in every direction.

Xi'an City Wall cycling takes about 90 minutes at a relaxed pace. Electric carts are available if you prefer not to pedal.

Afternoon & Evening: Dive into the Muslim Quarter(回民街), Xi'an's legendary food neighborhood. This is the heart of Xi'an's Hui Muslim community and the best Xi'an food tour you'll ever take:

  • Roujiamo (肉夹馍) — Xi'an's famous "Chinese hamburger." Slow-braised meat in a crispy flatbread.
  • Yangrou Paomo (羊肉泡馍) — Lamb soup with hand-torn bread. You tear the bread yourself — it's a ritual.
  • Biangbiang Noodles — Belt-wide noodles tossed in chili oil. The character "biang" is so complex it's not in any dictionary.
  • Persimmon Cake (柿子饼) — Sweet, crispy, and unique to Xi'an.
  • Pomegranate Juice — Freshly squeezed from local pomegranates, available at every corner.

Wander the Great Mosque (大清真寺), one of China's oldest and most beautiful mosques, blending Chinese and Islamic architecture.

Day 3: Big Wild Goose Pagoda & Tang Dynasty Show

Morning at the Big Wild Goose Pagoda(大雁塔), a 7th-century Buddhist pagoda where the monk Xuanzang stored scriptures he brought back from India. The surrounding Tang Paradise park is gorgeous for a morning walk.

Afternoon options:

  • Shaanxi History Museum — One of China's top four museums. Free entry but book online (limited daily tickets). The Tang Dynasty gold and silver collection is world-class.
  • Small Wild Goose Pagoda — Quieter and more atmospheric than its famous big brother, with an excellent folk art market.
  • Xi'an Museum — Adjacent to the Small Goose Pagoda, covering 6,000 years of local history.

Evening: End your Xi'an trip with a Tang Dynasty dinner show — traditional music, dance, and a dumpling banquet. It's touristy but genuinely spectacular.

Beyond 3 Days: Xi'an Day Trips

Have extra time? Consider:

  • Mount Hua (华山) — One of China's Five Sacred Mountains, famous for its vertigo-inducing plank walk. A full day trip.
  • Famen Temple — Houses an authentic finger bone relic of the Buddha. 2 hours west of Xi'an.
  • Hanyangling Museum — Less famous than the Terracotta Warriors but equally fascinating — miniature figures from an emperor's tomb, displayed under glass floors you walk over.

Getting to Xi'an

  • Beijing to Xi'an: 4.5 hours by bullet train (G-train). Book on 12306 or through your hotel.
  • Shanghai to Xi'an: 6 hours by bullet train or 2.5-hour flight.
  • Chengdu to Xi'an: 3.5 hours by bullet train through the Qinling Mountains — one of China's most scenic rail routes.

Practical Tips for Xi'an

  • Best time to visit: March–May and September–November. Summers are hot (35°C+), winters cold but atmospheric.
  • Getting around: Xi'an's subway covers the city center well. Taxis are cheap. For the Terracotta Warriors, private car is best.
  • Language: Less English than Beijing or Shanghai. A guide or translation app is highly recommended.
  • Visa: China's 144-hour visa-free transit applies to Xi'an Xianyang Airport (XIY).
