The part around the Great Wall was unhurried, which mattered more to me than squeezing in one more stop. The Forbidden City was a good counterpoint.
What helped was simple: our guide read the pace well. We got the background when it helped, then space to explore instead of a running lecture. With 9 hours to work with, the balance felt sensible.
Looking back, I would check the weather and dress in layers. We moved between the vehicle, open spaces and indoor sites often enough to notice the difference. I would still leave extra time for Tiananmen Square.
Looking back, this wasn't a “see everything” tour, and that was a strength. The time around the Great Wall felt specific to Beijing, not interchangeable with another city.
Honestly, worth doing for the Forbidden City; worth remembering for the small stops in between.
