I booked with two dishes in mind and left with a longer list. Mutianyu gave the route a clear sense of place rather than feeling like random snacks.
What helped was simple: the Beijing meeting point was simple to find, and the food stops came at a sensible pace. There was time to ask what we were eating rather than just moving to the next plate.
Small tip: do not eat a large breakfast before the Beijing tour. The portions at individual stops look modest, then suddenly you realise you have been tasting things for hours.
Looking back, this felt like travelling with someone who knew the area, not following a person holding a flag. That difference showed most at the Great Wall.
