The part around Mutianyu was unhurried, which mattered more to me than squeezing in one more stop. The Great Wall was a good counterpoint. The time around Mutianyu was not the part I would cut.
What helped was simple: there was no theatrical “VIP” treatment, just useful organisation and a guide who noticed when we needed a pause. That suited us. I would keep the Beijing and Zhangjiajie outline as it was.
Looking back, living out of a suitcase for 5 days is the only part I underestimated. The route itself had enough contrast that the days did not merge together. For this itinerary, the number of stops was enough.
Looking back, I would book this again for the pacing, not because every stop was spectacular. The ordinary transitions made Beijing and Zhangjiajie feel like a place rather than a set of postcards.
A full 5 days, in the good sense. Wear comfortable shoes and leave the evening loose. I would still leave extra time for the hutong lanes.
